| I just looked at the spider pics------I may not sleep at all tonight, and now I itch all over just thinking about it. It could be worse I guess. I remember seeing a picture taken of a tree filled with snakes during one of the floods close to my town. Random: As of yesterday evening, I'm on vacation. | |

I've just watched the short for 'The Raven', a story of Edgar Allen Poe with John Cusack in the lead role. Looks good. [/font] Nay, yes I am. I attended a wedding last weekend where the reception ended by all the guests following a live jazz band out into the streets in a police escorted parade around the block.....I have found "my people". The Poe movie sounds good. That could be interesting. I'm sorry to hear about your mom's arm, Nay. I hope she's on the mend quickly. I'll bet it was nice for her to get to share that time with you. My grandma and my aunt's boyfriend (who we think of as an uncle) are both in the hospital at the same time. Yuck! I went to see my Grandma today. Enjoy your vacay, Sharabella!

| The definition of "civil union" is different everywhere you go.
In general, marriage means the two people (or more, in some places) have shared legal rights and responsibilities. Their families become related, legally. They become in-laws, whether they like it or not. A marriage obligates a whole lot of people, not just the two who married. That is why divorces are messy. Lots of people and things are involved.
Personally, I don't care if gay people marry each other. I don't care if there are more than two people in a marriage. I don't care if they use the word "marriage" or not. If they want to be legally responsible for each other and their families, then let them. If they want to suffer all the mess and agonies and expenses of legal divorce when they split up, let them! In these days when so many people are running away from responsibilities, these people are asking to be held responsible for other people. Why are they stopped from doing that?
They're not asking to be "church married". They are asking for legal responsibilities. I'm all for people taking on responsibilities. If two people want to get married, as long as they are both of legal age, they should be able to get legally married.
Legal marriage is about laws. Church marriage is about sex.

| Nay, which of those candidates will raise your taxes and cost of living, and which won't? Who will grant more educational funding, and who will cut it? Who will provide better emergency help for floods, cyclones, wild fires, earthquakes? Who will maintain police and firefighter forces, and who will cut their budgets? Who will maintain your roads and highways, and who will cut repair funds? Who will fund hospitals, and who will tell people to buy bandaids?
Who can or cannot get married is a sensational topic, and totally irrelevant to your life. Whether or not there are timely emergency rescuers and shelters in times of crisis is relevant. You're being sucked into the fad issues. The real issues that affect your life are hidden. Which candidate will actually make your life not worse?

| DK, the fifth is not relevant to Australians. Shar, being on holidays means you can drink for all of us!
Your first post/response was superb, Julie. I couldn't agree more with everything you said. With rights MUST come responsiblilities.
But your second says I'm being sucked into a fad. That is not so. This minor party politican is a north Queensland identity, one who has been on the scene for an eon. He fell out with his party, left to become an independent and has now registered his own political party. His words and ideals are not my own and bizarrely he may do other candidates more good because they are seen as moderate when compared to him. Loud mouth, empty head. Fortunately, my part of Queensland does not subscribe to his dangerous ways.
I have examined the two major parties and their policies and performances for a while now. I always do. It helps to teach this subject to budding citizens because they question everything. Of course, they initially thought anarchy was the best type of government! Voting is compulsory in Australia and I don't go into an election taking my responsibility lightly. But like all politicans world wide, election promises are too often broken.

| Anarchy is good only when you are the baddest one around. What you really want is a dictatorship with you as the dictator. Or a theocracy where you are the god(dess) and everyone either loves you or are scared to death of you.
Since those aren't happening anytime soon, some sort of republic or democracy where the peons have rights is the best we can manage.
I can't stand politicians. Then again, better the politicians be the rats than me.
I'm ticked off at my state's primary election date. It's 2 months later than previous years. Why can't we be first?

| Julie, I share your frustrations. Politicians are like used car salesmen in suits. Oily veneer with a side order of untrustworthiness.
Random:
Tonight I joined my very first Book Club. The first book for the group is entitled: Reaching One Thousand by Rachel Robertson: http://www.rachelrobertson.net.au/
I have chosen to abstain because it sounds too much like some students from work. My current read though is "Death Comes to Pemberley".

| I've never gotten into any real book or movie discussions. I usually have very different opinions from most other people's, so I keep my mouth shut rather than have arguments or being treated as a weirdo.
For example, take the Parable of the Prodigal Son. It's supposed to be about the father forgiving the deadbeat son. I see the father as an insensitive jerk to the hardworking son. Not something you can say in church groups without getting some sort of nasty label.
I'm not reading anything at the moment. I'm still mourning the death of Michael Crichton.

| In answer to your poll, Nay, yes, I support gay marriage.
I didn't for a long time...and then I was on the fence....and now I do. It's been a recent thing to say I officially support it.
I've really examined the issue and heard a lot of arguments that make me feel that it's probably not imcompatiable with my religious beliefs as a Christian after all.
I know that being gay isn't a choice. Therefore, I don't get how it could be a sin. Sin implies you have choice. Therefore, if you are simply being who you are, then I don't see how we can deny someone equal protection under the law to marry the person they love and want to spend the rest of their lives with. I don't think it should be treated as a second class union. I have known and respected gay people, and I don't know how I could deny them the same legal rights and happiness that I will be entitled to when I find someone I want to marry someday. I think it makes a difference when you actually know and care about someone who is gay. Then it's not just a political platform, but a real situation that affects the happiness of MANY real life human beings.
Having said that, of course churches and other places of worship should have the right to either perform or not perform the religious side of gay marriage. (I hope more do. I imagine as more laws allow it, you will see more religious institutions following suit over time, just may take a while.) But in the meantime, I think the legal side of it should be allowed.
But this is all just my opinion. I know it's a sensitive issue that everyone has to come to his or her own opinion on.

| Yep, the first day of spring in our part of the globe is Tuesday. Hard to believe. We skipped winter in New Orleans. Random:Watching a televised version of The Phantom of Opera on stage (maybe Broadway). It's interesting to see the similarities and differences between this and Gerry's movie. I'd seen it on stage before back in '99 long before the movie, but it's been a while. So, I'd forgotten somewhat how it goes onstage. I guess Gerry's movie has spoiled this for me a bit. I so strongly love and associate this show with his movie. I've grown attached to the movie, but this stage version is still okay though. (Not completely thrilled with it, but this is just one version of it on stage. I also don't like the woman who was cast as Carlotta in this version. Minnie Driver rocked that part way better. This lady doesn't have the "diva" temperment down very well.) | |

| I watched the TV Phantom too. Not Broadway, the Royal Albert (?) in London. They said that it was an extremely lavish production. Interesting but, like you, I thought the Diva was a huge miscast.

OK, those that know me know that I'm ignorant of anything computer wise, so I want to know if it's as bad as I think.
My PC refuses to load Windows XP. Every time I try to start the computer, it simply tries to reload over and over. The one time I tried to totally wipe and reboot (yep, I know, I lost all my files) it seems that all of my C disc is unreadable. I'm of the opinion that my poor old PC is fried. Am I right?

Windows XP came on the 'puter. I'm beginning to think that a storm fried it. Can a storm take out just the C disc ?

What's your favourite season and why?
Autumn (now in Australia) is my preferred time of the year. The days and nights start a little earlier and/or later, the temperature is slightly cooler, growth is happening in the garden and the nights are easier to sleep.
