I blame getting old.




Random:

I spent a lot of last night with my cat sleeping ether on my head or across my neck. How could he possibly find that comfortable?

Cat has tummy ache?

Nay, sounds like the new pooch is a good fit.

My Saturday was spent in the Dark Ages. Woke up at 5am, probably because of some nasty lightning or thunder. Then I heard this loud "BOOF!" coming from outside. Two minutes later the power went out. It stayed out until about 6pm. Half of town lost power, and our street is usually one of the last they fix. Fortunately it was cold out so the house didn't get hot and muggy.

A couple of months ago the handle on the minivan back door broke so we can't open the back. Then hubby yanked the handle on the sliding door so hard the handle broke off a few days ago. Last night the back tires made "wap wap wap" sounds on the highway and the whole thing vibrated, but tires were not flat. No idea what that was. Minivan is now at shop. Hopefully they can fix the doors as well as put on new tires.

He just loves you big time, Shar.

Julie, each day he has shown little improvements but I have honestly never seen a more skittish dog. His breeder, once she realised he was not suitable for the show ring (teeth didn't meet standard), she didn't socialise him much outside her kennel where the older dogs dominated.

However, as to the problems with cars and handles, maybe you should get a priest to sprinkle a little holy water around your home!

Random:

Today is better already, I can feel it.

I'll look at the car when hubby brings it back. They said the tire had an impact dent that dented the radials in the tire.

Tomorrow is Mardi Gras. I need cream puffs.

I have never been to mardi gras... I wonder what its like? hmmm... Would I enjoy?

I'm in the mood to be decadent. Unfortunately, I'm not in LA and I have to work tomorrow.

This afternoon, both beagle boys greeted me with high spirits (frolicking and leaping). Jordy has blossomed already into a much more settled little fellow. His white-tipped tail, the barometer for beagles, is now high and happy.

Today is Ash Wednesday for all of us Catholics. T'is the start of the season of Lent. For me, it is a time of taking up rather than a giving up and this year I am reminding others of their good health and fortune by promoting Project Compassion throughout our school. http://www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion

And finally ... same sex civil partnerships are now legal in Queensland ... so Gerard Butler and Fry Guy can .... ya know.

Random: can I call in to work sick and tired?

I used to go teach with the flu. Told my students I don't get sick days, which I didn't. Some students and their parents were unhappy and complained to my department. I got called in and told I should get a sub, and pay the sub, which I refuse to do. But since then, I just canceled classes when I didn't feel good (or didn't feel like showing up). Never got a peep out of the department.

Nay, Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday) is a Catholic thing, you dingodong! It's the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. In older days without good refrigeration or food storage, people would use up all the fats on Fat Tuesday and make sweets and cakes and eat them all that day, since they used to give up tasty foods for Lent, and fats didn't keep for 40 days without going bad. So they partied on Fat Tuesday and get somber on Ash Wednesday. In some cultures like the Louisianans and Brazilians, they started partying earlier and earlier and bigger and wilder resulting in the debaucles we see today.

Christianity took over lots of "pagan" celebrations. Here is an example of "pagans" taking over a Christian celebration.

I proclaimed no religion... Not my forte.... I believe in God though... Maybe one day I will get to go to LA and enjoy Mardi Gras......

And where better to do that than the city that celebrates it's Voodoo connections. New Orleans ( or Na'lens as the locals say) is a culture into itself.

Well, I survived my first Mardi Gras as an adult! I will try to post pics later. It was a wild time. Will Ferrell was the Kind of Bacchus for the Krewe of Bacchus parade. We were up close. Very cool.

As an Episcopalian, I might add that Ash Wednesday and the observance of Lent is not just a Catholic thing. Or even just an Episcopalian and Catholic thing.

Having said that, did I actually give up something or take something on this year? No.....but I did got get my ashes.

It was weird to be partying in the French Quarter one night, then in church the next day (or later the same day if you want to get technical). But at the same time, it wasn't that weird at all. That's how it's done here. My understanding is that a lot of the bars in New Orleans close at midnight Fat Tuesday (or technically Wed.) because we party hard here, but then we sober up for Lent quickly. Now my party found a spot that was open past midnight, Coyote Ugly, but I still like the idea.

Anyway, I don't know how to explain how the secular and the sacred can coexist so well in New Orleans, but it's just how we roll, and I like it. It really is it's own country down here. I highly recommend you try it out sometime if you haven't.

Christmas does well secularly all over the world. I enjoy celebratory holidays of all creed, religion, and people. The partying holidays are the ones easily acceptable to people outside the religion (group). Who doesn't like to party and have fun and eat and get gifts?
