Sorry about your aunt DK and sorry about the snow. It's really getting old, isn't it?

It's beyond old. Laughing I had to clean off the car and driveway again. And it's cold too. When I came back in, my ears were hurting.

I made some Toll House cookies and if I see my neighbor, plan on giving him some to thank him for helping me shovel this winter. He has been a real help!

The chocolate puppy video was so cute. I wish bathing puppies would be that simple. Maybe if I did it in slow motion, like in the video, it would be easier. Laughing

Today, I went into my bank to deposit a little cheque. Whilst lining up for a clerk, I saw a young man (early 20s) sitting at the front counter accompanied by a young woman. What made this fellow stand out for me in a large branch such as ours was his standard of dress.

He was wearing cut-off denim shorts, a wife-beater grey singlet, had a tattooed tribal band around the top of one arm, his hair looked like he had just crawled out of bed, thongs on his feet and a mobile phone in his hand. Now you may ask what is so inappropriate about his very casual attire. Well, the young woman he was with was inquiring about a loan because I could hear the Loans Officer asking her for an amount.

Now, I was quietly horrified. What sort of image was this guy exuding to the general public coming in and out of the bank doors and what sort of message was he telling his girlfriend whilst she was trying to do business???

This incident is not isolated by any means but it started me thinking about how occasions (social, business or work) once had dress standards and those standards were visual representations of both your self-image and your desire to be viewed respectfully.

What do you all think? Have standards slipped? Have we become too complacent, laid-back, casual?

To all of those----Yes.

Standards of dress or conduct require role models. Today's role models, especially for the under thirty set, are actors, rockers, and kids that dress like porn stars. What can you expect. Dressing well , for a guy at least, seems to mean that you are dull or gay.

Dress codes have been slipping since the Renaissance days. Happily for me. My standard dress is a t-shirt, shorts or warm-ups, and sneakers.

If that girl is looking for a loan along with the shabbily dressed guy, I'd say they really need a loan, considering what his best attire is.

I dress the way I do because I hate people who judge others by what they wear, and they definitely underestimate me.

One reason I hate jury duty is that they tell me I can't wear what I usually wear. They make me show up somewhere I don't want to be, to do something I don't want to do, in clothes I don't want to wear. I showed up with a Gameboy.

Also true.
Hum------- You know, looking back, it seems that the last few centuries have set the trend to dress down. The sporty type clothing items gradually become the casual attire, while the casual attire becomes the business attire and the formal attire is only seen at weddings and grand occasions of state---- and eventually masquerade parties. The way we're headed, a thong bikini may soon be appropriate dress for an evening at the White House. (Seeing some of the people that go to such evenings-------it won't be pretty!)

i've been judged by my looks and my style more than once, too, so i agree. the world would be a better place if we would start to look at people for what they ARE and not for the outward appearance. of course, i'm just blowing smoke in the wind: it won't ever happen.

Amen to that! I work in the corporate world and it's all about what you wear, what brand you're wearing, all of it. It's really annoying. As I grow older, I fall for it less and less, though.

LOL! I don't know, but I've been working at this job for over 24 years and I know I'm smarter about that than I was when I first began! I dress in a classic style but it's more about my comfort now.

Sorry, but if someone comes into a public location, especially someplace like a bank, wearing a wife beater or their pajamas and slippers, I'm going to think less of them. I do, in fact, think it says something about that person and is not me just making a blind assumption.

Our school has pajama days near Christmas time. The kids and teachers and parents show up that day in pajamas. Some grown ups do the banking and grocery shopping in pj's that day also. From what they tell me, no one noticed. I guess what gets noticed is skin, either bare or altered (pierced, tattooed).

Around here, at least fifteen percent of the people shopping in Walmart (and presumably other places too) are wearing pajama bottom type pants (the ones with cartoons or other figures on them) and tee shirts. I've even seen a few walking around wearing the matching sets sold in sleepwear. They are actually the better looking ones. I don't see why I can't wear my fuzzy bathrobe to count pills.

Especially if your fuzzy bathrobe is the uniform navy blue top.

One place to see changing clothes is the military. Way back when they went into battle in full colorful formal coats and ruffles and stockings and wigs. Then came shorter jackets with less conspicuous colors like dark blue, brown, green and gray. Then no jackets, and now camouflage "fatigues". A few years ago they used to show up on TV in suits and ties, now they show up in fatigues.

Just for clarification, I wasn't referring to stuff like people wearing pajamas to school on a special fun day like Pajama Day. I'm all for fun and costumes for special stuff like that. I just meant the people who do it as just a regular outfit around town. Just MHO.

True but we have to start somewhere in being responsible for our own standards.

LegoJulie wrote:

I think this is a simplistic way to view that fellow's attire. It still costs money to buy some of those trendy arseugly clothes. Seeing him dressed that way definitely made me think less of his intellect. Sometimes there is nothing underneath uncouthness but uncouthness.

LegoJulie wrote:

Right or wrong, people will judge. Often it is our gender who are the harsher judges but then they are also harshest on themselves. If I was interested to knowing a person, I would still look at their attire and then take the time, effort and consideration to delve deeper.

Good on you, Roxanne. But I'll bet you are still judged by your gender and other factors too.

I couldn't agree more, Emily. You're brave to say it first.

I make blind assumptions about people according to their dress, speech, mannerism, skin color, hair colors, piercings, tattoos, number in their party, and facial expressions all the time.

If someone looks ticked off, I avoid them. If they are male, not old, and more than 2 of them, I avoid them, I lock my car doors, I look for armed guards or police, I look for exits, I look around for weapons.

I'm probably one of the people you avoid, Julie......hahahahaha. JK.

BTW, my friend walked through the set of "Good Christain Bitches" near his house just a few minutes ago. He thought it was filming for "The Good Guys" until he asked. There is so much filming going around here lately. Oh, and the Dallas International Film Festival (DIFF) starts today. Yay! I'll let you know if I see anything good.

Lastly, I got invited to the wine festival this weekend in Shreveport. I think it's the 5th year that they have done it and it's grown into a fairly big event downtown. The weather should be good. I'm sure Gerry will be out and about and I'm familair with the places that he has been frequenting so seeing him could be very possible - killing two birds with one stone. But I just don't care enough to drive 3 hours especially when the DIFF is going on here. Does that make me a bad fan?
