| Donna, that's a lovely surprise. Does she live far from you?
I too have friends wanting me to join Facebook but I am holding out, PJ. I have heard too many disturbing stories and believe it simply would drain too much of my time to maintain updates.

| I dunno, I only accepted her friend request late last night and haven't heard much from her yet, other than the "I haven't spoken to you in 20 years" bit.
We'll see....
I have my FB acct under my real name which is why I hardly ever go there. The page is private, so the only ones that can find me are those who know my last name...I think. And even then, I have to accept them. Problem is, if it's someone I don't really know if I want them to know all my personal business and babblings....to turn them down, I'd feel bad....which is why I rarely visit.

| I feel the exact same way, DK. I don't like having my real name online. I don't care if you know my real name, but I don't like having it available to search. I've kept it off until G's fans were promoting Butterfly and I signed up.
Most of my close friends do Twitter, which I like. FB is for family and friends. I do check every few days because my niece and siblings are there, and some Fass friends only frequent FB. I don't even remember my friends from back in school, so I don't expect them to remember me, unless I become famous or something. My last two years of high school, I went to school with a lot of cousins and I see them enough.
I cannot stand the online games everyone plays, on FB though. I have to keep reminding my followers that I will not send them a friend or animal to farmville, or fishtank or whatever they play.
If you love getting together with family and close friends, FB is good. I don't trust it, though. I'm looking to add new friends to my base of friends. You really can't do that on FB, because people will only add you if they know you.

| I got a FB account to keep up with my siblings. Then I added some more family and a few good friends. I go there maybe once or twice a week if I remember.
I would like it better if I could have separate categories of "friends", like a section just my family can see, a section just good friends can see, a section fandom friends can see, and a section just church friends can see. The people in my life usually fit into one of those very separate groups. There are very few overlaps.
I don't necessarity want my father to read stuff I talk about with my fandom friends. I definitely don't want my fandom friends to read stuff I talk about with my father.
As far as general use goes, for me, Facebook fails.

| I think that's what I'm feeling.
My blog at Multiply allows me to do that...share things with either friends, family, associates, certain people, or everyone. It's a great thing. For example, I have photos of children of family members, and I don't want EVERYONE to see them, for safety's sake. Doesn't quite work like that with FB.
It's not that I don't want my family to read things I write, but it doesn't really interest them. When I post something about a movie or tv show, that's usually directed at my friends, not necessarily for family or friends of family. I'm definitely less opened on FB. I'll write something on my status once a week, to let the folks know I'm alive. But other than that, it's pretty dull for me.

| And since my kids are already on FB and they want me to join, I'd rather keep it their site, caus I have The Pantry as the site I'm most comfortable. | |

| I'm trying to figure out what I want to do this year by way of vacation. I've been working quite a bit of OT and am determined to make enough money to at least do one thing this year, but I haven't decided quite what I want to do....
I looked at going to Gatecon in Vancouver. It's a sci-fi convention and Steve Bacic is going to be there, and while I love Vancouver, I've been there before and the trip would cost me at least 2K. If I'm going to spend that much, I'd like for it to go to something I haven't done before.
I'd also love to go to the UK. I think it would be fun to spend next New Year's Eve in a pub in Ireland, as compared to sitting in my house watching the ball drop in Times Square on TV. Then again, do I really want to spend my hard earned money to go to Ireland in the dead of winter???
Then there's a cruise. A cruise is something I have on my bucket list. I know it sounds corny, but I think it would be fun to do the Richard Simmons "Cruise to Lose". It would run me about 2K plus flight to New Orleans. And the activities would already be planned for me. Or I could just go on a normal cruise. But then I might eat too much.

| Take a normal cruise, DK. Why spend thousands to be sweaty and tired and told what to do and queasy on some boat without your kitties?
If I ever take a cruise, I would either take a whale-watching cruise up north, or a penguin-visiting cruise way down south.
You know, New Year is in the height of summer down in Oz. Round trip to Brisbane is around $2,300 - $3,000. The Great Barrier Reef is off the east coast of Queensland. There are animal conservation areas and zoos. There's also a nutty Bagel Beagle named Buddy somewhere around there.

| Looks like it's too early to book Christmas-New Year flights, at least online. Qantas is having a US-Australia flight sale, ending soon. I see St. Louis-Brisbane round trip as low as $1038. Oh, wow, flight from Los Angeles to Brisbane is 18-19 hours! Ugh! | |

| OK, how do they have enough fuel to stay up in the air so long? You have alot of great options, DK, but I agree with "Lego Girl", the Richard Simmons cruise sounds like a working cruise and you're supposed to be vacationing! | |

The wings are filled with fuel tanks. There are also fuel tanks in the cargo hold (beneath the passengers), and sometimes also in the vertical tail piece. One of the usual overseas long-distance planes is the Boeing 747. The 747 carries around 58,000 gallons of fuel, and uses around 7.5 gallons per mile. That gives the plane a range of about 7,700 miles without refueling. Straight line from Los Angeles to Brisbane is about 7,100 miles.

| Totally off topic, but I thought this was funny: NINE WORDS WOMEN USE (1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up. (2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house. (3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine. (4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It! (5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.) (6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake. (7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' . That will bring on a 'whatever'). ( Whatever: Is a woman's way of saying F--- YOU! (9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3. | |

| Andy Murray (Scotsman) is through to the men's final of the Australian Open. He will play the winner of Roger Federer vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
I'm rooting for the little boy who is the first Brit/Scot through to the final since 1977. Give a Braveheart rebel yell!

| I know, it happened so fast. My niece tweeted that her cat was sick, an hour later tweeted that they were taking her for surgery this evening and 2 hours later she tweeted that she was dead. I'm not sure what happened. The cat got sick a year or two ago but pulled through. She was always a tiny one, probably the runt of the litter. | |
