Birdie's?
How's weather today, Donna?
I feel extremely lazy today even though I have some odd jobs to do. It's chilly and sunny but may build to showers. If that happens, I shall layer up and sit on my heater.
There were seven guests online last night (Aus time). What be we doing that be so interesting??

The weather....well, let's see....it's 6:39pm, and the heat index is 102F. My house has now dropped to 86F, and that's with the AC and all of the fans running on full blast.
I never thought I'd be happy to see 86F in my house.

As most of the regulars know, I shall be holidaying soon and during my time away (in Scotland) I shall attend 'The Gathering' in Edinburgh.
This is the latest Press Release from the planning committee:
The Gathering 2009 has unveiled its world-class line up and programme for the Highland games and Scottish festival taking place in Holyrood Park on 25 and 26 July, in what will be the family gathering of the year.
International best-selling authors Alexander McCall Smith and Diana Gabaldon will be joining the big names in contemporary Scottish culture performing over the weekend, such as musicians Dougie MacLean, Capercaillie and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
The Gathering 2009 is a celebration of Scottish culture, and the feast of events range from the Deuchars World Highland Games Heavy Events Championship, piping, Highland dancing and clan village, to live music, whisky tastings, food and crafts fairs, children’s activities, and a large genealogy area.
Alexander McCall Smith, whose works include the Scotland Street series, and Diana Gabaldon, the American creator of the Outlander series of historical novels about an 18th century Highlander Jamie Fraser are just two of a host of writers, historians and genealogists who will be speaking in the Scotland Lives auditorium.
Diana Gabaldon said: "I'm thrilled to have been invited to take part in what promises to be a remarkable event. As Lord Sempill graciously said when inviting me, and mentioning Alexander McCall Smith's participation, ‘Well, this is very appropriate; we'll have an American who writes about Scotland, and a Scotsman who writes about Africa!’ It is indeed appropriate to the very expansive and hospitable spirit of the Scots, who have historically welcomed all visitors to cross their doorsteps and I’m sure everyone will find a warm welcome and have a wonderful time in Edinburgh."
The Gathering 2009 will cover the entire area of Holyrood Park behind Holyrood Palace and involve hundreds of participants, including 125 clan and family associations, more than 350 Highland dancers, and 60 crafts and food producers, all housed within 200 individual marquees covering almost 8000 square metres. Thousands of visitors from more than 34 countries have already secured their tickets.
Director of The Gathering 2009, Lord Sempill said: “This is not just a gathering of clans from across the world, this is a celebration of our culture that families from across Scotland can enjoy too, and this is reflected in the different activities and events in Holyrood Park which will appeal to all ages.”
Marie Christie, Project Director Homecoming Scotland 2009, added: “The Gathering is expected to be one of the highlights of our Homecoming 2009 events programme, which features more than 300 events across the country this year. The event organisers have done a fantastic job of engaging Scots worldwide, many thousands of whom will be joining the Homecoming 2009 celebrations.”
On the Saturday evening of The Gathering 2009, there will also be a Clan Parade of around 6000 people along the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle Esplanade for the world premiere of a specially-written Pageant.

Why does the name "The Gathering" remind me of a horror movie? Maybe something by M. Knight Shamalamadingdong?

Jealousy? It was a comment, nothing more. Maybe it reminds me of "The Reaping" or something. I dunno....
ETA: Hey, it was a movie. I think it was a thriller or horror movie or something. Maybe that is why the name rung a bell.... The Gathering - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0294594/

Tex, I still feel blah and was just trying to whistle my way out of blahness.
The movie you mentioned is a religious thriller but I've never heard of it. There is, however, some sort of rock band and a christian tv advertisement about gay marriages both called 'The Gathering'.

"The Gathering" is when all the immortals in Highlander get together to whittle themselves down to the last man standing.
There can be only one!

Nay, you better be careful. This could be an ambush. Good thing you've taken up boxing. You might need to bust a move. You may thank me later for preparing you for this hand-to-hand combat with some "under the kilt" pictures.

Happy Father's Day to all in the US. I am celebrating by having rib-eye, baked potato and a delicious glass of red wine after talking and laughing with my father on the phone. My sis and family had a wonderful day with my parents and a party for my father after going out to eat. I will see them in a few weeks. I am blessed.

A four-minute extract from tonight's one hour boxing class:
30 seconds of jab, cross, jab, cross. 30 seconds of lunges. 30 seconds of jab, cross, jab, hook. 30 seconds of lunges. 30 seconds of jab, cross, jab, uppercut. 30 seconds of lunges. 30 seconds of jab, cross, jab, cross, hook, cross. 30 seconds of lunges.

Sounds like you're working on sequences. Sounds like you had a non-stop aerobic class. Sounds like you're getting what you paid for. I hated my once every couple of months karate classes from hell that went a lot like that.
Then I hurt my knee and I don't do that anymore.

Our trainer has had the group do cardio work to warm up from the very beginning - short jogs, star jumps, sideways steps etc. Each week, it's intensified and changed but last night's combinations were, by far, the most gruelling.
At one stage, I slacked off (as I often do) and he called out across the room to me specifically " .. and make sure you're pulling the arm all the way back!"
If he wasn't so damn good-looking and I wasn't noticing so many changes to my physique, I really wouldn't give him so much cheek ...
Julie, how long were you doing karate and do you miss it?

Did a summer in high school, didn't hate it. Did a little over a year in college, along with my brother. I had a bad fall that twisted my knee. He continued for a while, then changed to fencing.
I wish I had managed to get a black belt. Other than that, I don't miss it. I don't like sparring and that became a larger part of the classes as we advanced. I'm short so I'm sparring with people whom I stared squarely in the sternums. They can reach me before I even get close to them. That got old really quick. The funniest time I had was when I sparred a girl about my height. We were both so tickled by it we laughed the entire sparring time.
In close combat, reach is a very big advantage. I love TV/movie scenes where a grown up reaches out and pushes the kid's head, keeping out of the kid's swing and kick distance. Longer reach means you hit first, or pull first, or swat first, or blind them in the eyes first.
I don't see a 80-pound kid taking out a 150-pound adult. Just sit on the kid and he'll die. Those superkid martial arts movies annoy me. I know, kids dream of beating up adults for a change.
What were we talking about?

I can completely relate, Julie. That's one of the reasons I gave up Tae Kwon Do right at the time I was training for my black belt. One of my friends there was the first woman to receive her black belt at my school. She got a concussion out of it. I understand that the men weren't supposed to make allowances for females, but at the same time some of those guys went out of their way to hurt women because I think they had a problem with us being there.
I remember one guy, though....gorgeous dude. We were matched to spar, and he didn't want to hit me. He said it went against his nature to hit a woman. The guy had fantastic skills. He won the match (obviously, he was about twice my size) but he controlled his blows so he wouldn't hurt me.

Sorry about your butt cheek charlie horse....snort. Really, I am....but it is kind of funny! Just remember, it's a process and a journey. Doesn't it feel good though? Even the pain turns to satisfaction and accomplishment. Keep on with your bad self!

My poor, tiny butt cheek flashes you, Tex
After a one hour massage, a hot soak and a glass of white wine, my quads are much looser, smoother and warmer.
Either that or I have a buzz because I just finished my last-work-day-for-six-weeks!!!!

A lot has changed in the past year hasn't it, Alice? In May 2008, I joined GALS as a member and didn't even make it to the six month mark before it became too _ _ _ _ for me.
You've had a much harder journey though and I certainly hope that the next six months bring some rewards, triumphs and a good dollop of satisfaction for you.
