May she be remembered for the music she gave us. She's now at peace.

I was driving home when a morning show radio presenter mentioned something before the midday news. Despite her well-known issues, I was still surprised by her death. Today's reports here are hinting at accidental death in a bathtub.
Her voice is simply irreplacable.

Ever notice celebrities either die really old, like over 70 with some old age thing, or under 50 of drugs or violence?

I didn't watch the Grammys, Julie. But that's lovely to hear. And refreshing.
I saw that Whitney's 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina was hospitalized, but has been released. As someone who also lost her mother at a younger age than should have happened, my heart goes out to her. But at least I was an adult and had at least a little bit of time to prepare. Poor Bobbi Kristina is so young, and lost her mother suddenly.
On Facebook, I also posted videos of some of my favorites of Whitney's. It was hard to narrow them down. Like Nay did above, I included "I Will Always Love You". The other two are below. Her version of "Jesus Loves Me" seems a fitting tribute. And her performance at the Superbowl during the Persian Gulf War seems to be one of the, if not the, top pick of people's all-time favorite peformances of our national anthem here in the U.S. Very moving and inspiring.

Today, a good man and friend lost his job.
He was a hard working employee in his industry for 35 years and they have 'sacked him' aka. terminated his contract. We polished off a bottle of wine not really knowing any other way of looking at it.
Sacked.

Man, that stinks. I'm sorry for your friend. I know how it feels. That's why I get irritated when companies/bosses expect you to forsake other parts of your life for the "good of the company". Good of the company is usually translated into basically living at work, taking work home, working weekends on top of morning and evening overtime, working through lunch and breaks, never taking vacation, sick, or personal time off and basically having no life outside of work. Then when said person does that, often it affects their physical and/or mental and emotional health, then at a moment's notice they can be let go without even a second thought - "for the good of the company".
I used to work for a company that did not allow their employees to work over 9 hours per day. Their philosophy was that after 9 hours, you were no longer productive and needed to clock out.
I sometimes wish we still lived in the days where shops closed up at 5pm and were closed on weekends. We're so spoiled in this country, we want things immediately, when we want it. My theory is if people weren't working so many hours during the week, they'd have time and energy to run their errands during the week and not have to work it all in on the weekend or even on Sunday because they had to work 6 days per week and half the day on Sunday from home.
And with that said, I'm off to get ready for work. I hope everyone has a good day!

There is no job security anymore. I know it scares me to know that even after twenty years, I could be fired for a supposed minor infraction.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, DK. Has she been offered any support (recruitment, counselling) from her workplace?
It just seems that loyalty and therefore longevity of service in employees is not respected anymore and that is so wrong.

My friend was a temporary worker who had been there almost a year. When they called her in she thought it was to offer her a job, but instead it was to let her go. But we all know it was retaliation, because her co-worker has been harassing her. It got so bad the VP of my department overheard her and asked my friend if she wanted her to go to my friend's boss. My boss's heart was in the right place...but hers was not.
And to top it off, when you're a temp you technically do not work for the company but the temp office, so it wasn't even their place to call her in like that.
This co-worker of hers is a real piece of work. We've all had trouble with her, even the management.

So your company lets a good part-time worker go under a bad cloud and sends the message to the shithead that she can treat people this way and everything will be hunky-dory?
Where are their brains, common decency and HR practices?

That's the question on the minds of a bunch of people at work, including supervisors of other departments.

Pretty much so, yes. And she was full time, was there almost a year.

We're a small company so we don't have an HR department. We definitely need one (if it would do any good).
The whole "anti-descrimination" thing workplaces have is a joke anyway. If they want to get rid of you, they will find a reason to do so. There is no loyalty when it comes to business anymore. They want you to be loyal to them, but the door doesn't swing both ways.

Wow, that's powerful. Thanks for sharing.
Happy St Patricks Day! I'm celebrating in true Irish-American style. I have a corned beef brisket roasting in the oven, accompanied by potatoes, carrots, onion and garlic. To tide me over until the meat is done, I just consumed a lunch of Irish fried cabbage and bacon, washed down with a Smithwick's Irish Ale.
The only thing missing is green, so I now need to get myself cleaned up and dressed.
Oh, and I'm watching a marathon of Leprechaun movies on the Sci Fi channel.
