Watch: Gerard Butler in ‘Gods of Egypt’ First Trailer
November 17, 2015 | 01:28PM PT Dave McNary Film Reporter @Variety_DMcNary
Liosngate has released the spectacle-laden first trailer for “Gods of Egypt,” starring Gerard Butler, Chadwick Boseman and Brenton Thwaites, three months before its Feb. 26 opening.
Alex Proyas directed the story of an unexpected mortal hero — played by Thwaites — who enlists the powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against Butler’s power-crazed Set, the God of Darkness, who has plunged ancient Egypt into chaos.
Boseman plays the diety Thoth. Filming took place last year in Australia.

Lionsgate’s CEO Jon Feltheimer has asserted that “Gods of Egypt” carries a budget of $140 million with the studio’s exposure at only $10 million due to Lionsgate’s output deals and Australian incentives.

The GODS OF EGYPT Trailer is Totally Insane Posted by Kyle Anderson on November 17, 2015
Trailers are very helpful to the movie-going process. Sure, they sometimes misrepresent the film, but in general they offer a very good snapshot of at least what kind of movie we can expect. I for one am grateful for the trailer to the new epic fantasy action movie (it says so on the YouTube page), Gods of Egypt. For two reasons: 1) because this is two minutes of sheer CGI-fueled insanity, and 2) because now I know what Alex Proyas has been up to. Oh, and reason 3) because it tells me that this can’t possibly be anything but a ridiculous movie.
In some good “they’ve done epic fantasy before” casting, the film stars both 300‘s Gerard Butler and Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as two of the titular Egyptian gods, Set and Horus, respectively. Apparently in this version of what Ancient Egyptian mythology was, the gods largely look like modern day white people but can, like, suit up into their animal-headed versions. Set is a god of the desert, storms, disorder, violence, and foreigners (?) and is portrayed as the usurper in the mythology, having killed his brother, Osiris, and is constantly battling Horus, Osiris’ son. Set is also the father of Anubis (Goran D. Kleut), the jackal-headed god of the underworld—so that’s pretty neat. Not sure much of that will make it into this movie, but we’ll see.
From the looks of things, Set blinds Horus and a young human boy, played by Aussie Brenton Thwaites, has to help get Horus’ bejeweled eyes back in order for the birdy one to fight and defeat the doggy one, who’s ruling Egypt with an iron fist. Also, he sends giant, toothy snakes to fight Horus, because what blue screen extravaganza would be complete without having to dodge enormous snakes?
The film was directed by Alex Proyas (who was born in Egypt, funnily enough), and who’d previously directed the features The Crow, I, Robot, and Knowing. But he also directed Dark City which means he does have a good movie in him somewhere.
Do you think Gods of Egypt will be a February fizzle or a poorly-timed gem? How do you feel about Jaime Lannister fighting King Leonidas in the big screen? Let us know in the comments below!

Watch The Racist, Deliriously Stupid Trailer For ‘Gods Of Egypt’ And Try Not To Claw Your Eyes Out
By Alex McKinnon, 18/11/2015 1125
Hollywood has form in turning the myths and legends of the ancient world into towering pyres of garbage — 300 and the sequel 300: Rise of an Empire; Clash of the Titans and its follow-up Wrath of the Titans; Exodus: Gods and Kings; Troy. Between the gratuitous T&A, the aggressive, leather-wrapped, Lynx Africa-scented hyper-masculinity, the abysmal Michael Bay-eque special effects and the liberal use of everyone’s favourite trope, White Dudes Playing Brown Characters For Literally No Reason, the sword-and-sandal genre has been a dumping ground for B-grade actors and terrible screenwriting for a good long while.
But even for this maligned corner of the cinematic universe, upcoming Lionsgate production Gods of Egypt looks to be something truly exceptional. Sometimes a movie comes along that’s so profoundly dreadful, so mind-bendingly idiotic, it transcends its own shittiness and becomes a work of art. Think Tommy Wiseau’s car-crash masterpiece The Room, or anything directed by Uwe Boll.
There was a hint something of that calibre was coming when the first promo posters for Gods of Egypt were released a few days ago, featuring Jaime Lannister as dressed by Liberace, Gerard Butler’s Biceps of Fury, and Token Sexy Lady doing Sexy Lady Pose.
image: http://junkee.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/come-on.jpg come on
What … what HAPPENED here.
Egyptian gods reimagined as frat boys at a racist dress-up party are indicative enough of what kind of movie this is going to be, but it’s the little details in those posters that promise true glory. Take the giant fire-breathing cobra being ridden like a pony on Hathor’s bottom left, or the terrible CGI winged men hovering awkwardly in the background. Something wonderful was on its way, and the world waited with bated breath for a look at the movie that spawned all this lurid nonsense.
Now, the day has arrived. The trailer has dropped, and it is everything that was foretold. If you think you know how stupid this is going to be, revise your expectations upward. Look on Gods of Egypt, ye mighty, and despair.
There is so much to unpack from those 195 seconds. Beyond the obvious ones, like “Why?” and “What crimes did Alex Proyas commit in a past life to go from directing The Crow to this piece of hideous wonder?”, I have so many questions. Here are some points to ponder:
Why is the hero a tiny British boy? Who let this child onto a movie set? Where are his parents? I would ask why every main character has a British accent, but if you’re wondering that you haven’t seen a single crappy sword-and-sandals movie, for which I pity you deeply.

Even HE’S surprised.
Why do things in this movie shatter into bright pixellated squares when they break? Shouldn’t godly shields and weapons be made of some stronger material than sugar glass? Do they make a delightful tinkling sound as they hit the floor, ready to be swept up by the cleaner?
image: http://i.giflike.com/pL2BqQE.gif
How badly is Game of Thrones underpaying Nicolaj Coster-Waldau that he has to make ends meet as an Egyptian pirate-themed go-go dancer? Like it wasn’t bad enough seeing Jaime Lannister as the douchebag-womaniser antagonist in that godawful First Wives Club ripoff a couple years back. Should we start a GoFundMe to buy him some pants?
image: http://i.giflike.com/SDAtX54.gif
And last but not least: why are the only brown people in this movie about ancient Egypt part of a helpless, faceless mass crying out for a white saviour? Even their clothes go beyond the generic-brown-people-in-rags trope Game of Thrones got so panned for; they’re literally all in brown. Who consciously chooses to make their movies and entertainment like this without anticipating the entirely predictable and justified backlash?
image: http://i.giflike.com/WFoq44s.gif
That last point has already been noted by plenty of people, because of course it has. This is 2015; you can’t just dress a Scottish guy and a Danish guy up as Egyptians and expect to get away with that shit.
You know the only person who thinks ancient Egyptians were white? Rupert f*cking Murdoch, that’s who, and if Rupert Murdoch is writing your diversity strategy you are cooked, fella. The only way I’m seeing this movie is for free, with friends who appreciate terrible movies as much as I do, and very, very drunk.

Watch Gerard Butler's last shred of credibility disappear in the Gods of Egypt trailer
By Alice Sinclair, 18 November, 2015
Right from the opening line of the trailer, you know what you’re going to get from Gods of Egypt.
A lot of kitsch. A lot of shiny, Gerard Butler-in-moulded-armour-shaped kitsch.
In short, the falcon-headed god Horus has been overthrown and blinded by evil god Set, who takes over Egypt and enslaves its people. Enter Bek, a common thief who returns (only one of) Horus’ eyes to him before they team up to save the nation from its usurper.
Cue reams and reams of shiny CGI, overblown stunts and acting of the am dram school variety. We usually hate to knock a film before it’s even out, but Gods of Egypt looks like the most unnecessary collection of special effects-with-a-script-tacked-on since the last Transformers film (what are we on now? Number eight?)
Gerard Butler will be gruff and woodenly imposing, Nicolas Coster-Waldau will be charismatic and wasted, while young newcomer Brenton Thwaite’s single direction is to look overawed at all times. Otherwise known as “the curse of the Alexander hair”
And all this before we’ve talked about the problematic fact of having a film set in Egypt without a single Egyptian or African actor in a speaking role. It baffles belief that we’re still having this conversation. Wake up, Hollywood. Before the box office returns do it for you.
Gods of Egypt will be out on 26th February. If you want to waste your money.

Gods of Egypt Trailer Meets Stargate
Haven’t seen the trailer for Gods of Egypt? You’re in for a treat. We all have that one movie we know is terrible but can’t help but watch. Imagine yours and the trailer for Gods of Egypt is so much worse.
Unfortunately, that’s real. It’s not a prank gone horribly wrong. Instead, it’s exhibit A for why Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldauj need better agents. What the hell guys? Who read the script and thought ‘badass?’
Luckily, Collider noticed what others did. The Egyptian mythology looked familiar.
Stargate. Ready to feel old? The Roland Emmerich film is from 1996. ColliderVideos has mashed together Stargate and Gods of Egypt. It makes the latter look almost watchable.
How does a film from 1996 have CG on par with a film slated for 2016? Watch the official trailer again. I’m almost tempted to watch it because of how bad it looks. The Kingslayer needs to step up his game when it comes to selecting movies.
Gerard Butler? Well, I like Olympus Has Fallen and 300. Even with their flaws, they were great popcorn movies.
I demand another Stargate TV show. Maybe a movie, but I’m scared after seeing the trailer.
$140 Million Budget
If you were watching the Gods of Egypt trailer, you’d make the honest mistake of thinking low-budget. Nope. $140 million from Lionsgate. Hmm, Gerard Butler and Game of Thrones dude don’t cost a lot.
The sets? Expensive but the horrible CG screws them up. The costumes? You could literally borrow from Syfy. Just ask for the Stargate SG-1 storage room. Throw some paint and polish on and call it a day.
Where did the $140 million go? Don’t dare say the CGI. No way. You can buy better templates for $50 online.
It may have been languishing in production for years, but damn. It shouldn’t look progressively worse. The story might be horrible, but it should at least looked polished.
Who knows, it might turn out to be a good time. One of those ‘why not’ movies. My question is who is the target demo for a horrible take on ancient Egyptian mythology? Ask audiences if they’ve heard of Horus and Set.
Those blank looks? Dead giveaway Lionsgate.
