• Gerard Butler is still fielding offers for sword-and-sandal action flicks even though 300 was, like, seven years ago and he hasn’t really had any hits since. He’s joining Alex Proyas’ Gods of Egypt, playing the nemesis of Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. On the plus side, Geoffrey Rush has also joined the cast to play the god Ra.

Gerard Butler Circling Summit’s ‘Gods Of Egypt’ EXCLUSIVE: Olympus Has Fallen star Gerard Butler is in discussions to join Game Of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in Gods Of Egypt, the Summit Entertainment film to be directed by Alex Proyas. The script was written by Burk Sharpless & Matt Sazama, the team behind Universal’s Dracula pic. I’m told Butler is in talks to play Set, a god of the desert, storms, and foreigners in ancient Egyptian religion. In Egyptian mythology, he killed and mutilated his own brother Osiris. Horus, the son of Osiris, sought revenge against Set for the killing of his father. Coster-Waldau will play Horus. They have both thrived in period macho turns, Butler in 300 and Coster-Waldau as Jamie Lannister in Game Of Thrones. Sounds like a good mano a mano match shaping up here if Butler’s deal closes. He’s repped by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment.

Proyas is directing from an original screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The film tells the story of a common thief teaming with Gods on a magical quest. Gerard Butler in Talks to Get Deified in Alex Proyas’ ‘Gods of Egypt’
Egyptian mythology is brimming with interesting stories about both gods and human kind, and one of those tales is being brought to big screen soon by Summit Entertainment, director Alex Proyas (Knowing) and writing duo Matt Sazam and Bruce Sharpless, who are also the screenwriting team behind Dracula Untold.
The title of the film probably gives away its subject: Gods of Egypt will tell the story of one of the many disputes between the ancient deities whose likenesses are scrawled all over the walls of ancient Egyptian buildings and tombs. Not much is yet known about the project or when Proyas intends to start filming, but a fresh piece of casting news offers a positive sign for Gods of Egypt‘s development.
According to Deadline, Gerard Butler (300) is currently in talks to play Set, the god of storms, deserts and foreigners. According to mythology, Set was jealous of his brother Osiris and eventually killed and dismembered him (that’s how gods settle family disputes). As a result of this, Osiris’ son Horus became Set’s enemy and the two were thrown into conflict, which in the film will play out with Horus seeking assistance for his revenge from Hathor, the goddess of love. If Butler is cast, this could mean we get to see some interesting fight scenes between him and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones), who has been cast as Horus.
Proyas’ previous films have leaned towards weird and occasionally gloomy sci-fi with films like I, Robot and Dark City. He’s also no stranger to revenge stories, having directed the original 1994 adaptation of James O’Barr’s comic book series The Crow, which was about a musician who is brought back to life in order to avenge the deaths of himself and and his fiancée.
This isn’t the first epic tale that Proyas has attempted to tackle. His planned adaptation of John Milton’s famous book Paradise Lost, which many consider to be unfilmable, proved to be exactly that when Legendary Pictures scrapped it entirely over concerns that the required budget was too high. Recreating hell on film is apparently a pricey challenge.
Butler was seen most recently in Olympus Has Fallen, in which he found himself trying to protect the President of the United States from terrorists during an attack on the White House. He’s perhaps best known for his role as King Leonidas in 300, which is no doubt what many will think of when presented with the idea of Butler playing an angry god. He may not have been immortal in 300, but he was definitely a force to be reckoned with.
While we wait to see whether or not Butler officially signs on for the role, answer this question: who would win in a fight between King Leonidas and Jaime Lannister?

Gods of Egypt doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’ll keep you updated on any further casting news.

| Australia? Good grief. Must warn the susceptible floozies.
In all seriousness, Geoffrey Rush being onward is a great sign. He gives such sterling performances. Maybe Butler will lift his game.
Rush = Ra. Coster-Waldau = Horus, Ra's grandson. Butler = Set, Ra's other son, murdered his brother Osiris (Horus' father) ...
Sounds good.

Really? I don't know. Movies about Egyptian Gods don't appeal to me. I never had any desire to see "Clash of the Titans" and when I finally did see it on tv, I thought it was bad. If this one is in that same vein, I'll pass. In response to these articles, there's some criticism about white actors being cast in roles of Egyptian Gods. That doesn't really bother me much. Didn't Rah have a bird head anyway? Set has some wierd animal head too. So what does it matter? But I had to chuckle at this comment: I've never imagined Set to be a large Scottish Man with a lisp. But then later someone posted this, which made me laugh out loud: I'm currently scripting a movie with a white Martin Luther King. It's gonna be huge.

| Clash of the Titans is/are (there are at least 2 by that title) about Greek gods. I like the older one with Lawrence Olivier, Maggie Smith, and Harry Hamlin. Egyptian gods + scifi = Stargate. Love the movie and the first TV series. The Percy Jackson books and movies are about modern day descendants of Greek gods.
Actors are supposed to morph into their roles. Race is just coloring. I didn't know Eddie Murphy played all those different characters, including an old white man, in Coming to America until I read the cast list. I'm pretty sure GB would look fine with a dog/donkey/armadillo head.

“Gods Of Egypt” Adds “Maleficent” Star Brenton Thwaites
Rapidly rising Aussie star Brenton Thwaites, 24, has joined the cast of Alex Proyas‘ mythological epic “Gods Of Egypt,” according to Deadline. The Summit Entertainment production will also star Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Geoffrey Rush.
“Gods Of Egypt” tells the story of a competing family of gods. After Set (Butler) kills his brother Osiris, his nephew Horus (Coster-Waldau) makes it his quest to avenge the death of his father. With the help of the goddess Hathor and a human thief named Bek (Thwaites), Horus aims to defeat Set and ultimately, his grandfather Ra (Rush). The script was written by “Dracula Untold” duo Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. Filming starts next year in Australia.
Thwaites made a name for himself in Australian television on the soap opera “Home and Away” and the teen drama “SLiDE.” Although he has yet to make his Hollywood debut, he has already landed some coveted roles opposite A-List stars. He plays the prince in Disney’s “Maleficent” opposite Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, as well as the leading role in Phillip Noyce’s adaptation of “The Giver” with Meryl Streep and Taylor Swift. Both films are scheduled to be released next year.

| Now when I see or hear mention of this new movie, especially the name Bek, I think of Ankh-Morpork on Discworld from the Terry Pratchett books. | |

'Fury Road' Actress Lands Female Lead in Summit's 'Gods of Egypt' (Exclusive)
Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Geoffrey Rush also appear in the fantasy epic.
Up-and-coming Australian actress Courtney Eaton has nabbed the female lead in Summit’s epic fantasy Gods of Egypt.
Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites and Geoffrey Rush are the male leads in the story, which is set in motion when a ruling god named Set (Butler) kills another, Osiris.
When Osiris' son Horus (Coster-Waldau) fails in his attempt at revenge and has his eyed plucked out, it's up to a young human thief (Thwaites) to defeat the mad god Set. Eaton will play a slave girl whom the thief falls for.
Eaton's fellow Australian Alex Proyas is directing the project, which will shoot Down Under. Proyas wrote the script with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Basil Iwanyk is producing via his Thunder Road Productions banner, along with Proyas via his Mystery Clock Cinema banner.
The casting is a major coup for Eaton, who only has one acting credit so far: Mad Max: Fury Road, a movie that isn’t due to be released until May 2015.
Eaton was discovered by a local modeling scout in her hometown of Perth. When Fury Road began casting a wide net for actresses, producers reached out to modeling agencies in the country. Eaton had no acting experience but the tape she made got her an audition with director George Miller. Following several screen tests to win over studio execs, she nabbed a role opposite Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.
After landing the Mad Max part, Eaton's manager (Nils Larsen at Principato Young Entertainment) flew her to Los Angeles where, after being pursued by the major talent agencies, she signed with CAA. She then booked Egypt upon returning to Australia.
Eaton is also repped by law firm Sloane Offer and by Vivien's Model Management in Australia.
