He's best known for playing ruthless action men on the big screen but Gerard Butler proved he's a real softie at heart when he stepped out in Sao Paulo on Thursday.

The 45-year-old actor is in Brazil filming a new advert for Ford and happily posed for selfies with fans as he made the most of some downtime between scenes.

The 300 star was enjoying a walk with a friend before lunch when he was swooped on by a number of passers-by.

Gerard happily posed for photos in the blazing sunshine as his security team looked on.

The Scottish actor was dressed casually in a cream marl, zip-up jacket which he teamed with white wash jeans and worn leather boots. He accessorised his low-key look with aviator sunglasses and a wrist full of bracelets.

Gerard jetted into Brazil on Tuesday and appeared to be in high spirits as he sauntered through the arrival lounge in Sao Paulo.

And no wonder, for his bank balance is sure to get a welcome boost after he shoots scenes for the world's fifth largest car company.

The ladies' man was looking great for his age in the same blue jeans he wore on Thursday, a baseball cap and a trendy tartan shirt.

The actor seems to be taking advantage of having plenty of spare time on his hands at the moment by branching out into the lucrative world of advertising, and his arrival was met with much excitement in the Brazilian press.

It is not the first time Ford have used a Hollywood hotshot, as Matthew McConaughey has starred in much talked about commercials promoting its luxury Lincoln division.

But it seems Gerard will be taking part in a more modest campaign, as he is said to be climbing behind the wheel of a Ford Focus for his advert, which will be filmed over the next two days.

Leaving Los Angeles was surely a wrench for the movie icon as he has been spending lots of time with his girlfriend Morgan Brown in recent times.

Gerry has become almost as well known for his romantic exploits as for his acclaimed acting career, which features star turns in the likes of Machine Gun Preacher, Gamer and, arguably his high water mark, The Bounty Hunter.

His latest movie London Has Fallen, the sequel to 2013's Olympus Has Fallen, is due to hit US and UK cinemas in January 2016.
