EXCLUSIVE: Move over Russell Crowe, there's a new gladiator in town! Gerard Butler dons Roman skirt and sandals to film scenes for new movie Gods Of Egypt

By Lucy Chesterton

Russell Crowe's reputation as the most legendary on-screen Gladiator is about to take a beating.

Hollywood hunk Gerard Butler was snapped looking ready for action in Sydney on Tuesday.

The actor, 44, was spotted shooting scenes for the upcoming Gods of Egypt in full costume.

First look: Gerard Butler is seen in full gladiator costume filming scenes for God Of Egypt in Sydney on Tuesday

I can see my house from here! Scottish-born actor Gerard Butler, 44, has been living in the Sydney beachside suburb of Tamarama while shooting the blockbuster

Regal beauty: Actress Elodie Yung is portraying an Egyptian goddess in the film, which also stars Geoffrey Rush and Bryan Brown

Setting the scene: The French actress, who has starred in GI Joe: Retaliation, slipped into a sheer gold bodysuit to play Goddess Hanthor opposite Gerard Butler

And while few big-screen heroes could pull off a look that includes full skirt and sandals, Gerard seemed more than comfortable as he embraced the role of the villain Set in the $150 million dollar action fantasy flick.

But while his character is the merciless god of darkness, on-set, Gerard seemed to be having a ball.

In fact, usurping the Egyptian throne and plunging the empire into chaos was all in a day's work for the performer, who managed to pretend he was in the midst of chaos while surrounded by crew.

In character: Gerard plays Set, a villain who plunges the formerly peaceful empire of Egypt in chaos and darkness when he usurps the throne

Ready for his close-up: Flanked by two costumed guards, the Hollywood actor seemed to be fully in character as he recited his lines on the Sydney street

Battle of the blokes: Russell Crowe and Gerard Butler have both donned skirts for their gladiator roles

Clash of the titans: Russell Crowe first donned Roman dress for the 2000 flick Gladiator, for which he won the Best Actor Oscar, while Gerard's 2014 role in the blockbuster Gods of Egypt sees him in the ancient costume

Get to the point: On set, it was all systems go as the elaborate costumes were donned and hired extras filled out the background as slaves and guards, giving Sydneysiders a taste of the ancient world

Aussie bloke: Following Gods of Egypt, Gerard was been slated to shoot a remake of surfer film Point Break in Australia, but has now pulled out

Local lad: Since touching down in Australia ahead of shooting, the actor has enjoyed social events including The Mother of All Balls last week and as well has been spotted at local cafes

Hollywood hunk: Although the character of Set is a villain, it wasn't all doom and gloom on set as Gerard cracked a smile between takes

The handsome Olympus Has Fallen actor is reportedly single, but that hasn't stopped him being seen with loads of local ladies, including being spotted with two women at the Belvedere Vodka party at Cruise Bar in Sydney on Friday night.

Earlier this year the star admitted he was still searching for 'the one'.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, he explained, 'I have not met the one princess yet,' adding, 'That doesn't mean I have not met a lot of princesses along the way, but not the one and only yet.'

Up close and personal: Even gladiators need a touch-up now and then! Consummate professional Gerard is used to the ministrations of makeup artists on set

Not so fierce: With a smile like that, it's easy to see why Gerard was named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 2013 and 2014

Focus: Although he's a star now, Gerard started out as a lawyer after going to law school

Boxed in: The scene called for Gerard to juggle a gold-plated prop box, but moviegoers won't find out the meaning until the film's release in 2016

Gerard Butler Gets God-Like on the 'Gods of Egypt' Set

Gerard Butler has never looked hotter in his muscle-revealing costume on the Gods of Egypt set on Tuesday (May 27) in Sydney, Australia.

The 44-year-old Scottish actor plays Set, a god of desert, storms and foreigners in ancient Egyptian religion in the dramatic flick.

Brenton Thwaites, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Geoffrey Rush, and more star in the flick, which is set to be released on February 12, 2016.

Gerard Butler’s buff physique shows why he’s fit for the leading part in ‘Gods of Egypt’

HIS film is still being made but let’s face it, Gerard Butler back in armour is likely to be a sure-fire hit.

Butler was in costume on the set of Gods of Egypt in Centennial Park today, as part of filming duties for the new epic.

And the 300 star showed why he has been chosen for one of the leading roles in the Alex Proyas film — he wears a suit of armour with ease.

The 44-year-old Scottish actor, who has become a popular fixture on Sydney’s social circuit while filming in Australia, is playing a villainous ancient god in the film.

Other actors appearing in the $150 million film include Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, from Game of Thrones, and Australian Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush.

Clearly comfortable throwing his weight around on set, Butler’s scenes were boosted by a number of extras in ancient Egyptian garb.

The actor has spoken previously of his excitement at working on the film in Sydney.

“It’s the largest budget movie I have ever worked on. It’s huge in every dimension. It’s huge in its scope and in its story and visually. (I, Robot’s) Alex Proyas is the man. Everything about the movie feels bang on,” Butler said.
