Too bad the intro wasn't included in this clip. It, and Gerry's entrance made me wince. His voice sounded off in the telecast. You can't really tell from this recording. It was more obvious on BBC. It sounded a little hoarse, like he was sick or drunk or had been partying hard. That probably contribued to all the tweets/observations about him on the BAFTAs.

Thanks, Dallas. You're right - I didn't think he sounded drunk at all in this clip. Just trying to be funny and perhaps not pulling it off.

He tried too hard, and seemed somewhat embarrased. He sounded American with Scottish accents every 6 or so words.

There was an article/blog about the BAFTAs with pics and beside Gerry's pic it siad:
Quote :
Gerard Butler Do you think he's embarrassed going to these awards shows considering the kind of movies he makes? If not... he should be.
I kind of wonder if he is somewhat self-conscious being in a room with great, accomplished actors - especially when he is introduced, not as an actor or with a reference to his acting abilities and work but instead referring to his looks/masculinity and as a cure for "the menopause'.

I guess considering the man has been to 3 or 4 places by jet in a matter of days, he must just be tired. I don't get the tweets that keep bashing his accent. To me he sounds the same as he's always sounded. He definitely doesnt sound like a New Yorker or American whatsoever.Actors accents tend to reduce anyway when they train for acting.

Most tweeters' points are that he doesn't sound Scottish consistently. His accent is a mess.

I suppose they are mostly Scottish/UK tweeters. Sean Connery has the same type of accent to me. And I did read the Sheena Easton used to be critisized about her "new accent" also. Neither of them sounded "Trans-atlantic" to my ear.

He always seems a bit uncomfortable and insecure when presenting awards. I think it's cute, though.

I feel bad for the guy and his accent. I know I picked up vocal tendencies when I was in Brazil and London, so my 'accent' is all over the place. Then my mother is not from the states, so that even messes with people more.
Then when I'm at work with all the people from Oak-Town??? Watch me go urban.
I think there are people who pick up nuances where ever they are. I believe Madonna is a big culprit. I suppose the Scots want to be proud of him, but find it difficult when he doesn't sound like them.

I think it would be funny if Gerry hung out with my family for about a month. He'd start sounding like me, or worse.
I'm from St Louis, very midwestern....very urban....yet my dad is from Mt Vernon, IL and my mom is from the Boothill of Missouri, where they're not Redneck, Southern, or Country....they're HILLBILLY. Most of her side of the family are really, really hick. Dad's side is country, less hick but still country. And here I am, from an urban area of Missouri, yet I was raised around these people, so I have this strange mixture of urban, midwestern, hillbilly, country, all mixed with a smidgen of eubonic. And partner that with the fact I got my major in communications and took drama in school, where they try to teach you to talk "right". I have to make an effort not to sound like a freak when I'm talking.

Donna, I know what you mean about having an accent hybrid. I've watched home movies of myself as a little girl, and I had a real Arkansas twang. Over time, I've lived in many states, as well as having an acting teacher I had in NYC try to get us to lose our regionalisms and learn to speak with a "general American" accent in order to be more marketable as actors (like you mentioned above in drama). I didn't try very hard to attain that, but I did pick up a few things.
Anyway, I'm still a Southerner, but when people have first met me, I have heard two different things:
"You're from Arkansas? Oh, that explains the accent."
"You're from Arkansas? You don't have an accent at all."

Haha! You'd think so, Julie, but if I remember correctly, both of those statements had been made by non-Arkansans.

LOL!
From my personal experience, if they mention an accent at all, that means they hear an accent.
"You hardly have an accent" means you have an accent.
"You have an accent" means you have a heavy accent.
Dumb stare of total incomprehension means you have such a heavy accent only people local to your accent can understand you.
