Joe Landaker poses on April 28 at his home in Big Bear City, Calif., with a portrait of his son, Jared, a Marine helicopter pilot who died on his last mission in Iraq. Landaker is among more than 300 volunteers who honor veterans buried in Riverside National Cemetery by reading their names leading up to Memorial Day each year.

I cry every time I think of that time.

What happened at Normandy was brutal.

So many brave young men killed.....

I remain humbly grateful to all the men and women who have served out great nation so we may enjoy all the freedoms we have.

Especially to my dad who spent 30 years in the service of our country.

I forgot to comment on this thread, but better late than never.

I am always appreciative of the men and women who serve and protect this country. I might not agree with all of the decisions our government makes regarding where to send our troops, but that doesn't mean I don't support the soldiers who go there and put themselves in harm's way.

I have two uncles on my mom's side that served in Vietnam. Her sister married both of them. The first one died in combat. He stepped on a landmine, and left behind a 3 month old baby - my cousin, who's my age. She then remarried another Vietnam vet, and they're still married today. In addition, one of my dad's brothers served in WWII.

I am grateful for all of our veterans - whether they be living or no.
