This kind of sounds like a twist on The Day After Tomorrow with Gerry playing a satellite designer instead of Dennis Quaid's climatologist. The storm is man-made and instead of saving his son, Jake Gyllenhaal, he's saving the world.

{TB EXCLUSIVE} Gerard Butler Lands Lead in Million Dollar Spec Script GEOSTORM

by Mac Maclamore

Gerard Butler has been tapped to star in one of 2013′s biggest spec sales GEOSTORM from writers Dean Devlin and Paul Guyot. The project, which capped off the first 7-figure sale of last year, was picked up by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions, to be produced alongside Devlin’s own Electric Entertainment. Originally set up at Paramount, the project has moved to Warner Bros. with the addition of Butler.

The story centers on a man-made superstorm that is circling the globe, destroying everything in it’s wake, and a satellite designer, and his engineer brother, who are tasked with stopping the storm and saving the world in the process. Butler is set to play the satellite designer, while offers are now out for the role of his brother.

Butler, who just last week picked up rights to the Jim Thompson novel “Pop. 1280″, has been busy thus far in 2014, with plans to star in the upcoming “Point Break” remake and, should it ever find it’s way out of development hell, the planned adaptation of the video game series “Kane & Lynch”.

Devlin, who once upon a time served in a 2nd unit role on his “Independence Day”, would be making his feature debut with Geostorm, one of the two features he attached himself to in 2013. Previously he’d directed over a dozen episodes of his television series “Leverage” for TNT.

Ellison will produce the film alongside Dana Goldberg, Marc Roskin, Rachel Olschan and Devlin himself. Matthew Milam will oversee for Skydance, while Jon Berg will oversee for Warners.

Butler is represented by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment.

More on the plot.  Of course he is character is "stubborn but charming".  I wonder if his "brother" will have the same odd American accent?
I guess it's a sci-fi movie and they go to space.  So it's "The Day After Tomorrow" meets "Armageddon". Oh, and don't forget the President assassination plot.  Throw a little "24" in for good measure - or London Has Fallen, same thing.

They need Aerosmith to sing the movie theme song.....

Gerard Butler to Star in Dean Devlin's 'Geostorm' (Exclusive)

Warner Bros. just picked up the Skydance-produced project from Paramount.

Warner Bros. has picked up the project, which was being initially developed independently by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions. Skydance remains involved and is producing with Devlin’s Electric Entertainment.

The story sees Butler playing a stubborn but charming satellite designer who, when the world’s climate-controlling satellites malfunction, has to work together with his estranged brother to save the world from a man-made storm of epic proportions. A trip into space follows, while on Earth a plot to assassinate the president begins to unfold.

The material is in Devlin's wheelhouse. He co-wrote such destruction-laden pics as Independence Day and Godzilla. Geostorm would be Devlin's feature debut. Devlin previously helmed episodes of TV's Leverage.

Ellison is producing with Skydance’s Dana Goldberg along with Electric’s Marc Roskin along with Rachel Olschan. Paul Schwake will exec produce.

Jon Berg is overseeing for the studio.

Butler is shooting Gods of Egypt for Summit and is due to star in Alcon’s remake of Point Break, which will film this spring and summer. Geostorm would begin production this fall.

He is repped by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment.

Let's combine all the great plot elements from a bunch of other films because we're out of new ideas. Maybe the stupid audience won't notice. Yes, that's it.

This sounds more like a SciFi channel movie of the week. Recycled recycled recycled plots. Recycled. I predict bad dialogue and lots of extraneous, superfluous, gratuitous effects.

Gerard Butler to Topline Dean Devlin’s ‘Geostorm’

Never one to let much time go by without a new movie entering development, action star turned romantic comedy mainstay turned action star again Gerard Butler has signed on to lead the cast of the upcoming sci-fi adventure film Geostorm.

Written and directed by Dean Devlin (Independence Day, Godzilla), Geostorm will star Butler as a gruff but likable satellite designer. When the world’s climate regulating satellite array goes haywire, Butler is called in to prevent a man-made super storm from decimating the planet. Complicating things is the fact that, to do this, Butler will have to work closely with his estranged brother, whom he has not spoken to in years. A space mission is sent up in hopes of repairing the satellites, but a covert plot to assassinate the president back on Earth points to this disaster possibly being a planned event.

Previously developed independently by Skydance Productions, the rights to Geostorm were recently sold to Warner Bros., although Skydance will remain onboard in an executive capacity. Devlin’s Electric Entertainment is also lined up to help on that end. Devlin is primarily known for his film and television producing career, which means Geostorm will be his feature directing debut, though he did helm multiple episodes of TNT’s Leverage.

For his part, Butler’s latest film was the somewhat Devlin-esque action flick Olympus Has Fallen, and the Scottish actor can next be heard reprising his role of Stoick the Vast in Dreamworks’ sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2. In 2015 and 2016, Butler will be returning for Olympus’ sequel London Has Fallen, as well as toplining Alex Proyas’ Gods of Egypt and taking over the Patrick Swayze role in a remake of 1990s hit Point Break. To say that the former King Leonidas has a lot on his plate would be a definite understatement.

While it’s not too surprising that Devlin would be attracted to a project like Geostorm – the over-the-top premise certainly recalls many of Devlin’s projects with longtime collaborator Roland Emmerich – the plot may just be too busy for its own good.

The description makes it sound like Geostorm is trying to be a sci-fi disaster film, a space adventure, and a conspiracy thriller all at once, when the more advisable route would be to concentrate on making just one of those elements as good as it can be. Quite frankly, both the title and plot also seem a bit like a Syfy original movie. Add in a space tornado full of sharks or make the climate satellites cause every volcano on Earth to erupt, and Geostorm could almost pass for an Asylum mockbuster.

The enjoyment level here will likely rise and fall on two main factors, those being Butler’s lead performance and the quality of the sure to be mountains of CGI special effects. If either one of those elements comes up short, audiences will likely find themselves losing their patience with Geostorm‘s seemingly cliched storyline. For Devlin’s sake, let’s hope Geostorm ends up being more Deep Impact than The Core.

A Giant Earth-Destroying Storm Is No Match For Gerard Butler… And His Bro

Brah, I got this. *smashes satellite with a wrench*

Uproxx readers, which sort of blockbuster movie would you like to see?

The story of a satellite “designer” who is called upon to fix a deadly satellite that’s gone rogue
The story of two estranged brothers working out their differences to save the world
The story of an epic storm that was GASP! CREATED BY MAN!
The story of an assassination attempt on the president while he’s handling a space crisis
All of the above.

If you said “all of the above,” have I got a movie pitch for you.

Dean Devlin, author of such hits as Stargate, Independence Day, and Gladys: The Groovy Mule†, has written another sci-fi action adventure film called Geostorm. It’s about a deadly global event that can only be conquered through I guess satellites… and somehow there’s an assassination attempt on the president at the same time and space and maybe donuts and brotherly love and also weather? It sounds like a hot mess to me, but I guess when you look back at it, Independence Day wasn’t so much about an alien invasion as it was single parents and father/son relationships and substance abuse and strippers with hearts of gold and the flu. And Bill Pullman gives a bitchin’ speech about ‘Murica.

So Warner Bros. has agreed to produce the project, and are even going to let Devlin direct, after he got some practice in on TNT’s Leverage. Just when you were like “Please stop, my heart can’t take any more action-packed excitement,” BAM! They cast Gerard Butler.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

The story sees Butler playing a stubborn but charming satellite designer who, when the world’s climate-controlling satellites malfunction, has to work together with his estranged brother to save the world from a man-made storm of epic proportions.

That’s right. Even though Gerard Butler is busy this summer filming a Point Break remake that no one needs and absolutely no one asked for, he’ll be free in the Fall to film whatever Netflix fodder his agent can negotiate for him. Pretending to be a satellite “designer” (Why designer? Does he not engineer the satellites? Program the software? Does he merely make sure they are aesthetically pleasing? Circuit boards are all feng shui and whatnot?) is probably as easy to Butler as being a professor of archaeology. Just say “Oh my God!” a lot and act really astonished that there’s a script to everything.

Which, come to think of it, is probably his approach to playing Bhodi, too.
