Mavericks movie shooting in San Mateo on Thursday, streets to close

Traffic on some San Mateo streets will be interrupted Thursday as shooting for the film on Mavericks surfing legend Jay Moriarity cruises into town, a publicist for the production confirmed.

The "Of Men and Mavericks" shooting means Hacienda Street between 31st and 26th avenues will see some closures from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., said San Mateo police. Crews are also slated to be working on 25th Avenue between El Camino Real and Flores Street from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Through-traffic and parking will be interrupted by the work, police said.

Crews have been working in the region for weeks with on-location shooting in Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay.

The movie follows the adventures of surfing wunderkind Moriarity as he sets out to ride the towering breaks of Mavericks in San Mateo County.

He succeeded but would die before his 23rd birthday in a diving accident in the Indian Ocean.

The film, starring Gerard Butler as Moriarity's mentor and Elisabeth Shue as his mother, is due out Oct. 12, 2012.

Hollywood Film to Shut Down San Mateo Streets
The production of 'Of Men and Mavericks' will require various street closures Thursday.

Production of Of Men and Mavericks, a feature film being shot primarily along the California coast and starring Gerard Butler and Elisabeth Shue, will require the closure of several streets in San Mateo on Thursday.

Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Hacienda Street between 31st Avenue and 26th Avenue will face closures to through traffic and street parking, according to the San Mateo Police Department.

In addition, between 4 p.m. and 2 a.m., the production crew will be filming in the area of 25th Avenue between El Camino Real and Flores Street. Through traffic and street parking will also be affected in that area, police said.

The San Mateo Police Department and city have been working with the production company to minimize the impacts of the filming, according to police.

The film production company has taken the responsibility of contacting and notifying any potentially impacted residents or businesses in the area to facilitate any needed access during the production.

Of Men and Mavericks is due to be released in October 2012. Filming has also taken place in Pacifica and Half Moon Bay.

Just saw something on the local tv news about this. Gman wasn't there.

I know where those streets are. I lived in San Mateo during my last two years of high school.

The news also mentioned that filming will continue through December. I hope that's true, because I'm way too busy until half way through November to take any time off.
