| The slogan says it all: "A Fan Domain for the Sanely Insane" I have created this fan board for Gerry Butler to be a "safe" place...a haven, if you will...for people to be themselves. When it comes to "celebrities" and "fandoms" and things of this nature, I think sometimes we forget that there's nothing wrong with taking off the rose colored glasses, removing the "celebrity" from the very tall pedestal we've put them on, and letting them be themselves. The ironic thing about it is, when we've done that, we can let our own proverbial hair down and be ourselves as well. Many times and with many different fandoms (and trust me, I've been around enough of them to know it isn't just an isolated incident), the trend is to run across the two extremes: 1) The extreme gushers: These are the fanboys/fangirls who can't see beyond their own object of affection to see reality. In other words, everything the actress/actor/etc. does is perfect, without flaw, and without discussion. These are the people who accuse you of being bashers and haters when you say something that doesn't fit in with their own fantasy mold of what they've made that person out to be (which, in most cases, is rooted in their own psyche, and not in reality). 2) The extreme bashers: these are the "cynical" ones who see bad in everything an actor, actress, musician, director, etc. does. I wouldn't call these real fans, though they seem to devote just as much time (if not more) to the object of their bashing than the gushing fanboy/fangirl would. I won't explain these types of people any further, because you know who they are. They're bulliies, and sometime in their life someone peed in their Cheerios. But there is a third type of fan (thankfully)...I call them... 3) The "Sanely Insane" fan: these are the people who love to gush when it's appropriate, yet haven't forgotten reality in the process. They see the actor/actress/musician/etc. with all of their flaws, warts, ingrown toenails, bad temper tantrums, Prima Donna moments, etc...yet still love and admire them for it. While they don't make excuses for bad behavior, they don't sit in the seat of condemnation, either. They don't have their knickers in a twist, or a bug up their arse. They love to have fun, tell it like it is, let their hair down, and just kick back and relax. In case you haven't figured it out by now, I have created this forum for the #3 type of personality. "The Domain for the Sanely Insane". Not all insanity need be dangerous, or stalkerish, or creepy. Some insanity is just plain silly, and lighthearted, and fun. After all, isn't that why you got involved with it in the first place?? So if you decide to lurk, join, or whatever...I hope you have fun. And I hope if you are lurking, you'll come out of lurkdom and introduce yourself. You might think we're insane...but that's only in your head. | |

| So does that mean someone only half peed in your Cheerios? Or maybe they tried to pee in them and half missed the spot? | |

No one gets to pee in my Cheerios! I'm somewhat cynical, and somewhat sane, somewhere between fan type 2 and type 3. Maybe 2.75. I don't bash celebrities much.

| Nah, stating an opinion isn't necessarily bashing. Celebrities aren't perfect, and sometimes they're asses just like the rest of us. I prefer to live my life without the rose colored glasses. That way I can better see where I'm going.
At least you're not between the 1 and the 2.

| I'd hate myself if I were between 1 and 2. Those are the worst kind of people. Blind zealots. Or is that an oxymoron?
Since this is a pantry, where are all the food?

| It's a duck. I took that pretty picture last Christmas. It was quite tasty once I baked it. | |

I'd like to classify myself as this type of fan, nice to know there's a group of like minded fans and a forum for them.

| Mmmmm, well....I can't say I was one of those fans in the beginning. As many of you already know, after I saw Erik for the first time, I lost my mind for a few months. I joined one of his fansites for two years and I was one of those obnoxious gushers for the first two months. I could not get enough of Gerard Butler. In retrospect, I realize he was filling a tremendous void in my life at the time. I joined GALS eight days after the death of my mother (after being a lurker for months before). Two years later, I'm myself again. LOL! I still love G, but can now look at him as a man....not as an enigma. | |
