Oh, the accent.............. affraid

Not even close to the real Sam. And, of course, I have issues with his American accent in general. But I heard the Scottish slipping in with his "Milo" NYC American accent attempt mixed with a really bad southern twang. It was all over the place.

The movie looks good, though. I hope I can ignore the accent and get lost in the movie because I really want to see it.

Ain’t No Problem A Bazooka Can’t Solve In ‘Machine Gun Preacher’

Wow. Gerard Butler is helping hungry kids in a way that makes Sally Struthers look super-lazy. He stars in Machine Gun Preacher as Sam Childers, a former drug dealer who decides to up his good karma by traveling to the Sudan and helping the impoverished by kicking hunger down a bottomless pit. While building an orphanage, he also forms a militia to fight against the warlords that are drafting the children to become soldiers.

It’s your move, Sean Penn.

Gerard Butler looks damn good in the ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ trailer

Okay, so as a member of Gerard Butler’s Fan-Girl Club, I’m primed to love anything he does, even when he makes a really crappy movie. It’s been hard for us G-But Fan-girls, because the man has made some really hideous career choices in the past few years. But I’m starting to wonder if Gerard is on a new career path, because I’ve just watched the second trailer within a week of a Gerard Butler film which actually looked interesting. The first was Coriolanus, which, IMO, looked awesome. And now I’m watching the trailer for Gerard’s starring turn in Machine Gun Preacher, and… it looks good? Like, qualitatively good. This isn’t just a fan-girl getting tingly for Scottish dong. This actually looks like an interesting movie, and Butler looks like he’s giving a solid-to-excellent performance. WTF?!?!

You know what I think it is? I think it’s spared the “he’s over-acting” criticism because it’s a true story. Butler is playing a real guy, Sam Childers, who was quite a sketchy drug dealer and criminal. Childers changed his life when he found Jesus, and he really did go to Sudan to try to help out. The promotional bit is:

“When ex-biker-gang member Sam Childers (Butler) makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war, he is outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region’s vulnerable populace, especially the children. Ignoring the warnings of more experienced aide workers, Sam breaks ground for an orphanage where it’s most needed–in the middle of territory controlled by the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a renegade militia that forces youngsters to become soldiers before they even reach their teens. But for Sam, it is not enough to shelter the LRA’s intended victims. Determined to save as many as possible, he leads armed missions deep into enemy territory to retrieve kidnapped children, restoring peace to their lives–and eventually his own. This [is an] explosive, real-life tale of a man who has rescued over a thousand orphans from starvation, disease and enslavement.”

If they had simply made it up, if it was a fictional screenplay, I think people would hate it. But you can’t write this.

Also, on the superficial level, how great does Gerard look once he ditches the mullet? When he accepted Jesus, he also accepted a decent haircut. AND! For the first time ever, Gerard’s American accent is decent. There were moments in the trailer where I didn’t hear any Scottish brogue in there. Is it possible for my beloved G-But to have actually done a really good movie? Gasp!

I think she's nailed it with regard to the criticism. The true-life story behind the movie gives it credence and that credence should extend to the acting. However, I disagree about the quality of his acting.

I find it interesting that people are criticising the subject matter when it's based on a true story. There are a lot of White Savior criticisms, which I don't get. It's a white man trying to save African children. Why are there criticisms about the race? Does it matter what race a person is when they try to help another human being? Anyway, I'm not going to post all the articles out there - because everyone has an opinion and there's too many to post. But I will post those from major sites/blogs (or those that are just clever and funny).

Anyway, here's an article by Slash Film:

‘Machine Gun Preacher’ Trailer: God, or Guns, Will Save Your Soul
Posted on Friday, August 19th, 2011 by Russ Fischer

The story behind Machine Gun Preacher is inspiring: Sam Childers traded criminal activity for a life attempting to rescue children in Sudan who would otherwise be co-opted into warfare by the Lord’s Resistance Army.

But the movie that dramatises Sam Childers’ story — Gerard Butler stands in for Childers, with a seemingly unstable accent — looks like total by the numbers superficial claptrap. He finds Jesus! He finds a soul! He helps kids! And when the resistance army fights back, he picks up a bazooka and blows them to hell! It’s like Rambo: First Blood Part II for a more sensitive, post-2000 set, courtesy of Monsters Ball director Marc Forster. Check out the trailer below.
Obviously Machine Gun Preacher might be better than this trailer makes it appear — the simple fact of condensing the story into trailer form necessarily obscures a lot of the minor beats that could make it bearable. But wow, is this particular trailer unbearable. Or so I think, anyway.

Gerard Butler does all the emotions in new Machine Gun Preacher trailer

We’re never quite sure what to make of Gerard Butler. Often he seems happy to do what he does best – stomp about, killing things and shouting (300, Law Abiding Citizen, Rocknrolla), but he does have this nasty habit of trying to appear in films where he has to try and have stupid human feelings (PS I Love You, The Ugly Truth, The Bounty Hunter). So what happens when you combine the two? Machine Gun Preacher, apparently.

Have a gander at the trailer below, and see how uncomfortably those two things sit together. Particularly enjoy the inclusion of the actual line “SO THAT I CAN SAVE SOME CHILDREN”. Wonderful stuff:

I am midwestern, and as some would say, even Southern. I remember Butler's accent in "Game of their Lives"...filmed right here in my hometown, the town I was born and raised in. So I think I know a little bit about what I'm talking about.

That being said, I could see from the trailer that Gerry is trying...but it isn't there. That's not to say it will take away from me watching the movie. After all, I'm not going to be watching to see how well he pulls off the accent. If the storyline and acting is good, I'll be willing to overlook it.

Just like I did when Kevin Costner played Robin Hood. Wink

'Machine Gun Preacher' Trailer: Gerard Butler and His Almost-American Voice and a Rocket Launcher Save Sudan

Was The Help too girly of a "white star does accent to help black people" story for you? Well, here's one with Gerard Butler, and rocket launchers. Plus, it's based on a true story, so that means it washes away twice as much white guilt.

When it comes to shouting in a completely inexplicable accent, Gerard Butler is the best. Please, no one ever show him one of his movies. Let's keep this "American" voice pure.

Gerard Butler Saves Sudanese Orphans With Help From God (and a Bazooka) in Machine Gun Preacher Trailer

“I done a lot of things, that I ain’t proud of. Hurt a lot of people.” So says a repentant Gerard Butler as real-life ex-con Sam Childers at the beginning of the trailer for Marc Forster’s September curio, Machine Gun Preacher. How can Childers save his crumbling soul? By becoming a born-again missionary helping orphans in the Sudan… and by hurting those who oppose with the aide of a bazooka. What did you expect?

Debuting at the Toronto Film Festival, Machine Gun Preacher has some difficulties to overcome — namely that it’s another myth-of-the-white-savior film coming out so soon after the debate was kicked up by The Help. Of course, Childers is a real-life hero — and he did help build an orphanage in the Sudan that houses some 200 children who would otherwise be homeless or worse — so Preacher has a bit more credibility than what transpired between Skeeter and Aibileen, but still: that poster didn’t help. The trailer might, if only because it presents Childers as a man determined to overcome his past demons. That’s the stuff that works well here; the orphan-saving antics don’t, despite the presence of a pretty badass bazooka.

Other issues: Butler’s indiscernible accent, the always-great Michelle Monaghan reduced to giving pep talks at the supermarket (nice Egg Beaters plug, though), precious little Michael Shannon, and that corny kicker. There’s a good movie in this trailer, but whether Forster and Butler can pull it off remains to be seen.

VERDICT: Not ready to convert.

Machine Gun Preacher Trailer: Gerard Butler Saves Africa And Why I Hate Hollywood
By TK

I’m trying — trying — not to come down too hard on Machine Gun Preacher. It’s a decent enough trailer, though it’s a bit heavy on the melodramatic one-liners and inspirational music. Despite being something of a Douchey McGreasebag, I actually like Gerard Butler in some flicks, as long as he stays away from romcoms. However, children, I am what they would call conflicted.

You see, it’s true. The story of Sam Childers, former drug dealing biker gang member, is an absolutely riveting one. How a man like that turns his life around and dedicates himself to forming the Angels Of East Africa, a home for orphaned children, tohelping the poor, starved, and war-ravaged people of a country thousands of miles away? That is some dramatic material, and it’d be surprising if it didn’t get made into a movie.

On the other hand, I can’t help but think — here’s yet another movie about war and famine ravaged Africa, and once again the noble hero is a white guy. A white American, no less. The thing is, there are countless powerful, emotionally affecting stories of tragedy and heroism that take place in Africa that involve actual Africans, but as is typical, Hollywood chooses, Hotel Rwanda aside, to focus on a Caucasian protagonist. It is endlessly frustrating. Look at the IMDB page — there are an astonishing number of white people, considering it’s a movie about the plight of the Sudanese.

You see, here’s my issue: I have zero problems with Machine Gun Preacher being made, although it looks like it might be a healthy bit of melodramatic Oscar bait. I think it’s a hell of a story, and it deserves to be told. I just wish Hollywood had the f*cking wontons to produce the other stories, the ones about neighbors helping and saving each other in the midst of the brutality and violence and horror around them. The stories that show that there are other Africans besides warlords and children, besides soldiers and victims. The stories that use Africans as the story, not the setting.

I don’t have a problem with Sam Childers’ story being told. I just wish they’d tell the other stories too.

So that aside, watch the trailer. It’s got a killer cast — besides Butler, it stars Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon, and the phenomenal Kathy Baker.

First Machine Gun Preacher trailer aka Mullet For My Valentine
Posted by Luke at 23:58 on 22 Aug 2011

Gerard Butler plays a biker with hope in his heart and an AK by his side, in Oscar-baiting redemption fest Machine Gun Preacher.
If you're anything like me, the pairing of righteous heroic deeds and 'based on a true story' is usually met with snorts of derision. Take Statham/DeNiro actioner Killer Elite for example - I snorted so much during the last trailer, my girlfriend thought I'd started a small pig farm in my little study room. That and the unbearable stench wafting through the door.

Now meet Sam Childers. Sam was a hellraiser and a drug addict, before experiencing a religious awakening and deciding his life would be better spent building schools for Sudanese orphans. But there was a problem - the kids he set out to help kept getting kidnapped by militias. So Sam looked into his once-black soul and responded the only way he knew how: by taking the motherfucking ruckus to their front doors. Hells yeah!

Turns out Sam is a bit of an ultimate badass, and whereas Killer Elite and its ilk would like you to believe in The Macho Adventures Of Generic Gruffman, there's no disputing Childers took up arms against some very dangerous people. Because he did. And he still does. It's undisputable.

Before you get too excited, I don't think Machine Gun Preacher is going to be the Rambo-esque guilty pleasure we're all secretly hoping a title like that suggests. Take Exhibit A below: just listen to the music and the soundbytes - that's some grade A holier-than-thou cheese. I think I can see what's going on here though - Gamer, Law Abiding Citizen, The Bounty Hunter... Butler is trying to push The Ugly Truth 'below the fold' on his IMDB page.

http://crushable.com/entertainment/trailer-recap-machine-gun-preacher-963/

Trailer Recap: Machine Gun Preacher

There exists the story of an American man who found Christ, renounced his degenerate ways, and opened a Sudanese orphanage where three hundred war victims currently live. Hollywood distilled that story down to two hours, and this trailer compressed those two hours into three minutes.

This man to whom the story belongs is named Sam Childers, but I’m going to call him Gerard Butler because of the fact that here, he is played by Gerard Butler. The trailer opens on a motorcycle so that we can instantly understand the rebellious nature of Gerard Butler, who, in slicked-back hair and an earring, walks through glass doors basked in the halo-like glow of $200,000 worth of studio lights. In voice over, he says, “I’ve done a lot of things that I ain’t proud of.”

I have done some things that I ain’t proud of:

• I have used my roommate’s shampoo because I ran out of my own.
• I have pretended to like boys so they’d help me with my math homework.
• I have eaten guacamole for dinner, out of the bowl, with a spoon, plus extra hot sauce.

Sam Childers has done some things that he ain’t proud of:

• He has stolen money.
• He has dealt drugs.
• He has shot guns and punched people.
• He has ruined the lives of his wife and daughter.

Gerard Butler has probably done some things that he ain’t too proud of, either:

• He has broken up with Jennifer Aniston.
• He has starred in The Ugly Truth.
• He has dropped a couple grand on a leather jacket he ended up not being all that into, after all.

Back inside the video, Gerard Butler’s wife, Michelle Monaghan, yells at him because he has been doing shitty things like ruining the lives of her herself and their daughter. He asks her to help him. She agrees and this means church.

INTERTITLE: BASED ON THE INSPIRING TRUE STORY

Church is a problem though, because Gerard Butler “ain’t got no good shoes.”

INTERTITLE: OF ONE MAN’S EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY

Gerard Butler goes to church, is baptized, and then sees, quite possibly for the first time, footage of war atrocities in North Africa. He decides immediately to go to Sudan because he thinks he can help fix things over in that there country that has been in the midst of one or another civil war for the entirety of its modern existence.

Destiny manifests. Gerard Butler arrives in Africa and sees a pair of men with machine guns. “You guys in the army or something?”

“We are freedom fighters.”

Way to do your research, Gerard Butler. Don’t eat the groundnut stew.

TITLE: HE WAS SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN

Gerard Butler soon learns that conditions in East and North Africa are, in fact, pretty shitty – and he is appalled and utterly indignant. He meets a comely young missionary who warns him to be careful. He is not careful, on account of being too appalled and indignant.

INTERTITLE: HE FOUND SOMETHING

He found orphaned children. Many of them.

INTERTITLE: WORTH FIGHTING FOR

With machine guns.

Here are some things that happen in quick succession: Gerard Butler returns home and tells his wife he plans to build an orphanage; Gerard Butler builds an orphanage; Gerard Butler finds out there’s a bounty on his head; Gerard Butler’s orphanage is burned down; Gerard Butler rebuilds his orphanage.

INTERTITLE: GERARD BUTLER

The next half-minute are a montage of gunfire and action. Explosions and excitement. The comely missionary argues with Gerard Butler and forces him to defend his use of machine guns. He admirably defends his use of machine guns. Then he blows up $500,000 worth of cars and film set.

INTERTITLE: MACHINE GUN PREACHER

As the trailer ends, Gerard Butler is sitting up against the wall with an African boy. He says, “Helping you kids is about the only good thing I ever did in this life,” and we’re ready to forgive him for all the punching and yelling he did two minutes ago. “You got no idea what I’m saying, do ya?”

No, Gerard Butler, that Sudanese boy does not got no idea what you’re saying. But at least the trailer ends with a joke – because while the atrocities in Sudan will continue, at least the white actor has found redemption.

(Palate cleanser: there’s a really good documentary made some folks who teach at my college called Darfur Now that’s worth watching even though it doesn’t star Gerard Butler at all.)
