You know, if I didn't know what pubs were like outside the US, and I didn't know that Gerry had stopped drinking, I would really think that he had a thing for the drink, with that quote.

It likely isn't pubs in scotland is like a social club/sandwich shop. While my hubbing was in the military he and a friend went up to Loch Ness stopped at a pub for a sandwich on the way back to the base and due to the laws pubs have to close down between certain hours on Sunday so they lock the doors and no one comes in or out until a certain time because it is now a social club. Social clubs can be open on Sunday. They almost didn't make it back to base on time because of the delay.

I'm not sure about Scotland, but I have a good friend from England who doesn't drink, and she tells me that pubs over there are not like the typical 'bar' in the U.S. She tells me that pubs there are places to gather and socialize, and she goes there herself when she visits home. Knowing what I know of her and how much she HATES alcohol, that tells me there's a vast difference - because you'd never catch her setting foot in a bar on U.S. soil.
