Gerard Butler is caught picking food bits out of his teeth on the set of his new movie, Machine Gun Preacher, on Wednesday (July 14) in Detroit, Mich.

Stop saying “ew” — we all do it!

Gerry was also seen walking with one of the production assistants, aka personal umbrella holder. Great way to shield yourself from the sun!

First, who writes copy at JJ? High school boys? Awful headline!

But I did look at the pics. I realize how spoiled I must be because if I was standing there with a man and we needed an umbrella for any reason, he had better be holding it over me! I am just used to men being gentlemen. Maybe there is a good reason the girl was holding the umbrella and GB was not. You really can't judge a situation by one picture.

It's quite normal to have assistants holding umbrellas for actors.

I'd hit him over the head with the umbrella and then hold it over my own head. But probably only if it was raining. I don't hold umbrellas over my head if it isn't raining.

Hot sun makes people sweat. Sweating ruins make up and costumes. Redoing make up and changing clothes take up more time and resources. Sun also makes people tan and hair bleach, causing issues with make up and film continuity.

Dousing with water also ruin make up and costumes.

Cheapest and easiest to provide shade. If needed, portable fans.

The umbrella was because we were getting yelled at for going outside. The director would send us outside and bring in our stand-ins so we could get some air (it was HOT in there) and we'd go outside and the sun was beating down on us. They put tents up later, but I BELIEVE at this point it was when he was being filmed outside the bar getting ready to head into it. They didn't have the tents up at that point, so the umbrella was to keep us from getting crazy sunburn. (We kept sweating our sunscreen off and I was neon red by 3 PM despite my best efforts to stay out of the sun!)

Never thought Michigan sun would be as brutal as Texas sun. I know it's the same sun, but sun and heat seem so much worse here.
