Gerard Butler To Play 'Perverse Leprechaun' In Peter Farrelly Sketch Comedy
'It's very funny. It's insane,' actor says at premiere of 'Bounty Hunter.'
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Lindsay Soll

Last week, word dropped that "There's Something About Mary" co-director Peter Farrelly and a crew of other filmmakers had assembled an insane cast of A-listers for a sketch-comedy film whose inspiration is the wacky 1977 classic "The Kentucky Fried Movie." Stars include Elizabeth Banks, Kate Winslet, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber and Gerard Butler.

The names were tantalizing, but next to nothing was revealed about the content of the untitled comedy. But on Tuesday night on the red carpet for the premiere of "The Bounty Hunter," Butler kicked MTV News an amazing description of his role in the film.

"I play the most perverse, disturbing, disgusting, foul-mouthed leprechaun you could ever imagine," he said. "I've been kidnapped by Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott so they can get their pot of gold. They don't really quite realize what they've bargained for. They land themselves in a bit of trouble."

It gets better still. To fit into the shoes of a wee leprechaun, the famously buff star of "300" and "Gamer" will be swapping out his body for that of another actor for some CGI-assisted comedy.

"It's funny because we're using that technology from 'Benjamin Button' — what's the politically correct term? A little person? — and they're going to put my head onto the little person," Butler said. "It's very funny. It's insane."

Wait, are you messing with us? Is this a St. Patrick's Day prank or something?

"It's for real," the Scottish-born actor assured us. "You have to see it to believe it."

http://www.shockya.com/news/2010/07/31/massive-untitled-comedy-goes-to-virgin-produced-and-gets-a-name/

Massive Untitled Comedy Goes To Virgin Produced And Gets A Name?

We’re one step closer to seeing that massive comedy collaboration with Richard Gere, Anton Yelchin, Gerard Butler, Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Anna Faris, Johnny Knoxville, Julianne Moore, Liev Schreiber, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Kate Bosworth, Josh Duhamel, Justin Long, Seann William Scott, Emma Stone, Jack McBrayer, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Uma Thurman. As reported by Deadline, the untitled comedy now belongs to Richard Branson’s latest business endeavor, the new production company Virgin Produced.

The film will consist of 19 segments, 14 of which have been shot. Each piece comes from a different director like Steve Brill, Steve Carr, James Gunn, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, Brett Ratner, Banks and Griffin Dunne. Virgin has a deal with Relativity Media to distribute their films, but Relativity is also co-financing this one.

Could this get any better? Apparently it can. Deadline is also saying that the stellar roster is continuing to grow. The portion the Farrelly brothers directed with Jackman and Winslet is already in the can, so it’s being peddled around to pull in even more talent. That segment is being described as “especially outrageous and R-rated.”

Lastly, a Variety article discussing the launch of Branson’s packaging and production company is calling this film Movie 43. Did the untitled comedy finally get a name? It’s possible, but this is the first I’ve heard of it. Actually, it’s not, but the only other article I found using that title includes details that don’t quite correlate with the facts we have. In a Slash Film piece about Relativity’s new streaming deal with Netflix, one of the film’s on the list to hit Netflix and not a premium television channel is “Movie 43, written and directed by Peter Farely.” Spelling error aside, if they’re talking about the same film here, where are the names of the other directors? The press release also states that the film is set to hit theaters this year. With five more segments to film? I doubt it.

17 Film Directors Walk Into A Bar...
|
EXCLUSIVE: How many movie directors does it take to make a comedy pic? Try 17.

Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media has signed on to co-finance an untitled comedy. Each of those directors are shooting segments for a film styled in the vein of 1970s sketch comedies Kentucky Fried Movie and Groove Tube. Like those predecessors, this will wear its R-rating like a badge. Relativity confirmed it's making the picture, but wouldn’t specify the number of directors, because many of them are still falling into place. Shooting will wrap in May.

So far, Pete Farrelly, Brett Ratner, Elizabeth Banks, Bob Odenkirk, and Griffin Dunne have directed segments, with Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Gerard Butler, Banks, Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott, Emma Stone, Matt Walsh, Tony Shalhoub, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kieran Culkin, Chloe Moretz, and Patrick Warburton.

The segments are shot on the fly, the actors getting favored nations pay. Farrelly, for instance, got lucky on his segment, called The Catch. He caught Jackman with a day off from his Broadway play A Steady Rain. Farrelly shot in one day with Winslet, who lives in New York.

Kavanaugh got involved when the project shook loose recently from Overture. Farrelly, his frequent comedy collaborator Charles Wessler, and GreeneStreet Films’ John Penotti are the producers.Tim Williams and Tucker Tooley are exec producers and Witness Protection Films is also producing.

Wessler has been hustling the concept so long that it once got killed at Paramount, after the production head was visited by Tipper Gore and decided this didn’t fit the family-film mode. Kavanaugh will set up distribution through one of his output deals.

Using multiple directors to film segments of thematically-connected subject matter isn’t unique. It was done with Amazon Women on the Moon, and again on Paris, je t’aime.

Richard Branson Venture's Virgin Film Has Raunchy Laughs, Lotta Stars

The first film that gets Richard Branson's Virgin Produced film shingle off the tarmac--it was innocuously mentioned as an untitled Peter Farrelly film in the announcement of Branson's joint venture with Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity--has a bigger concentration of first class cabin-caliber actors than any under-$8 million film I can remember. And the cast is still growing. Deadline was first to reveal the Kentucky Fried Movie-style laffer when Kavanaugh replaced Overture Films as financier and the film started production. They had a good cast then, but the filmmakers keep bolstering by showing prospective talent the raucous segments shot so far, especially the Farrelly-directed seg with Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet that is especially outrageous and R-rated. Aside from Jackman and Winslet, the cast now includes Richard Gere, Anton Yelchin, Gerard Butler, Naomi Watts, Anna Faris, Johnny Knoxville, Julianne Moore, Liev Schreiber, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Kate Bosworth, Josh Duhamel, Justin Long, Seann William Scott, Emma Stone, Jack McBrayer, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Uma Thurman. 14 segments are in the can, with 5 to go. Steve Brill, Steve Carr and James Gunn have joined a director roster that already had Peter and Bobby Farrelly, Brett Ratner, Banks and Griffin Dunne. The pic, a co-production between Greene Street and Relativity, is produced by Kavanaugh, John Penotti, Peter Farrelly and Charlie Wessler. Tim Williams and Tucker Tooley are exec producers.

First Film from Virgin Produced to be “Untitled Comedy”

The official Twitter account for Virgin Produced recently announced the first project from the new production and packaging company.

The film, currently known only as ‘Untitled Comedy’, is set to feature a whole host of stars and be in the format of a series of risqué comedy sketches that will be connected with a ‘unifying storyline’. Actors already on board include such big names as Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Richard Gere, Anton Yelchin, Gerard Butler, Naomi Watts, Anna Faris, Johnny Knoxville and many more.

------------------------------------

Relativity Media, LLC (RML) announced today it has begun production on the UNTITLED COMEDY project. In January, Relativity Media came aboard to co-finance and co-produce the project, and will arrange distribution through one of their studio partners. Production will continue thru late May.

Peter Farrelly, Charles Wessler, GreeneStreet Films’ John Penotti and Relativity Media’s Ryan Kavanaugh are producing the project. Executive producers are Tim Williams of GreeneStreet Films and Tucker Tooley of Relativity Media. Co-producers are Tom Gormican and Marc Ambrose. Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko also serve as associate producers. Witness Protection Films also serves as a production company partner.

Originally set up at Overture Films, the project kicked into high gear after the producers met with Relativity Media last December. The brainstorming session lead to a revamp of the central premise of the film. The new team created the template for a unifying storyline for a series of sketch comedies in the vein of the 1970s hits Kentucky Fried Movie and Groove Tube.

“Relativity has been the perfect partner through the extraordinarily complicated process of putting this movie together. We are thrilled to be underway,” commented Farrelly.

The filmmakers who have already completed their work are Peter Farrelly, Brett Ratner, Elizabeth Banks, Bob Odenkirk, and Griffin Dunne. Additional directors will be announced shortly.

The growing cast includes, Elizabeth Banks, Gerard Butler, Kieran Culkin, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Knoxville, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Liev Schreiber, Sean William Scott, Tony Shalhoub, Emma Stone, Matt Walsh, Patrick Warburton, Naomi Watts, and Kate Winslet. The producers will announce additional cast members as further deals are solidified.

“We all sat down and came up with what we think is a hilarious through-line for the movie,” said Wessler. “Given the amount of pot I had smoked, at least I think it is hilarious.”

Penotti added, “This has been one of the most fun and challenging projects we have ever undertaken. We are completely blown away by the caliber of talent that this project has attracted. It is a testament to the quality of Charlie and Pete’s original concept.”

Farrelly and Wessler are long time collaborators, working on many of the classic Farrelly Brothers comedies including There’s Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber and Shallow Hal.

Production on “Untitled Comedy” is reportedly ongoing: 14 of the sketches have been shot, with 5 to go. It is expected to be in cinemas this year.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/melbourne-life/apprentices-nearmortal-cut-20100425-tlp9.html

Apprentice's near-mortal cut

A Hollywood bigshot's offer on an Australian's dark-comedy screenplay was nearly killed in cyberspace.

FORCE of habit very nearly cost Steve Baker his big break. The winner of the 2007 Tropfest short film competition was name-dropped by John Polson - Tropfest founder, actor and director - when a major Hollywood producer asked if he knew of any up-and-coming talent.

Charles Wessler, co-producer of the Farrelly brothers' high-grossing gross-out comedies Dumb and Dumber, Shallow Hal and There's Something about Mary, took Polson at his word, and sent Baker an email.

''Trouble is, it went straight into the 'junk' box,'' says Baker. ''I was about to hit 'Delete all', as I normally do, when I saw this 'Looking for screenplays' subject heading and thought, 'Hang on a second.'''

Though based in Sydney, Baker is in Melbourne this week to co-direct, with fellow Australian Damon Escott, the short film whose screenplay he sent to Wessler in 2008. It's called The Apprentice, a dark comedy being shot in an abandoned hospital with Shane ''Kenny'' Jacobson, Colin ''Lano'' Lane and rising American star Anton Yelchin among the cast.

It's one of 17 short films being shot here and in the US for producers Wessler and Peter Farrelly (who is also directing two of them) for inclusion in an as-yet-untitled portmanteau feature. With a budget of about $5 million, the 90-minute feature is at the super-cheap end for Hollywood. Despite that, it has attracted a big-name cast, with Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, Sam Rockwell and Gerard Butler among them.

The Australians in The Apprentice are playing Americans, as the nine-minute short (the longest in the film) is the only portion not being made there. ''I wanted it to be Australian, but I was convinced by people in marketing departments that it's easier to sell if it's perceived as being American, so I went along with that,'' says Wessler.

The Apprentice is set in a morgue, with Jacobson as the head mortician and Yelchin (Chekov in J. J. Abrams's Star Trek movie and Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation) as the apprentice mortician. The filmmakers aren't revealing details of its plot, but they do drop some hints about what to expect.

''It's quite extreme and twisted,'' says Baker. ''But it is a comedy.''

''We want that moment where people cover their eyes but leave their fingers open,'' adds Wessler, citing by way of comparison Cameron Diaz's infamous hair-gel scene in Mary.

Wessler says he and Peter Farrelly intended making 32 short films and culling them to get the best 20 or so - because in 18 years of making movies together they've found ''about a third of what we shoot just isn't funny, even if we think it's hilarious''.

But, funnily enough, the studio didn't like the idea. ''They said, 'Wait a minute: we're going into this knowing we're going to throw 10 of these away? That doesn't make any sense. Let's try it the other way,''' says Wessler.

Ever the master of comic timing, he waits a beat, then adds: ''We were both right.''

Once this project is released to the masses, I wonder if it will feed Gerry's head with even more fodder to use when a) trying to pick up chicks; b) giving interviews.

I can totally see Gerry going the whole "leprechaun" route when trying to use a pick up line on an naive 20 year old unsuspecting model.

Maybe the "coffee and a f*ck" line might work better when accompanied by a bad Irish accent. Wink

Another pic posted after an 18 hour work day. It looks like Gerry filmed this segment on Feb. 24, 2010. It probably didn't take more than a day since the longest short story segment in the film is only 9 min (and isn't Gerry's segment).

Gerry has gone all leprechaun

http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/news/3149148/Gerry-has-gone-all-leprechaun.html

The Scots actor plays the foul-mouthed Irish fairy in a new fantasy flick, for which he will be digitally shrunk.

He was snapped on the set of the as yet untitled film - the brainchild of There's Something About Mary director Peter Farrelly.

The flick features an all-star cast including Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts.

Bounty Hunter star Butler's character Chaun regularly lets rip with a stream of x-rated insults.

And he gets kidnapped by Jackass star Johnny Knoxville and American Pie actor Seann William Scott's bad guy characters - who want to steal his pot of gold.

The pictures of Glasgow-born Butler decked out in costume appeared on the web yesterday.

Much of the movie is being shot on a "green screen" - with Butler's head being put onto a digital image of the little character.

He recently said of Chaun: "I play the most perverse, disturbing, disgusting, foul-mouthed leprechaun you could ever imagine.

"I've been kidnapped by Knoxville and Scott so they can get their pot of gold. They don't realise what they've bargained for. It's very funny - it's insane."

Well folks. It's finally happened. The Jersey Shore has moved to the big screen. Snooki is ready for her close-up!

Snooki took to her Twitter today to complain about the heat wave in Los Angeles. Why was she so far from the Shore? Celebuzz now has the answer.

Word on the street is the Pickle Princess (whose real name is Nicole Polizzi) will make a cameo appearance in Relativity's upcoming raunchy comedy Movie 43 (Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Produced seems to be the producer of the film).

The flick features a variety of segments directed by such powerhouses as Brett Ratner and Peter Farrelly and features such stars as Elizabeth Banks, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Knoxville, Emma Stone and Christopher Mintz-Plasse aka McLovin'.

The film is set for release next early next year.

Gerard Butler Wanted to Leave with One Strong Impression (NSFW)

By James Wallace Mon., Oct. 10 2011 at 8:52 AM

While in town promoting another film, Gerard Butler gave us a little preview of his character in Movie 43 -- a feature film comprised of various comedic shorts directed by Brett Ratner, Peter Farrelly, James Gunn, Elizabeth Banks, Bob Odenkirk and other Hollywood heavy hitters of comedy. The film features more stars than a planetarium, with the likes of Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Emma Stone, Josh Duhamel, and Butler himself just to name a few.

Turns out Butler stars in Ratner's short as, appropriately enough for the thick-accented Scotsman, leprechaun brothers. Foul-mouthed, mother-loving, pyromaniac leprechaun brothers at that. If you couldn't gather by that description, it's pretty foul and NSFW (and hilarious). Just watch the video ... you'll see ... but you can't say we didn't warn you ... but seriously, watch it.
