Hollywood Mobilizes to Help Haiti

Besides George Clooney and Matt Damon’s January 22 Haiti Aid Telethon, and Sean Penn arranging an emergency medical shipment to Haiti, many other members of the Hollywood community are stepping up to help the earthquake-ravaged island. On the eve of their annual Golden Globes Awards ceremony, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have donated $100,000 to Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti relief fund. Sandra Bullock, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s foundation, have committed $1 million in relief. And Artists for Peace and Justice is mounting a fundraising brunch this Sunday, reports writer-director Paul Haggis:

Our board members have raised a significant amount of money in the past few days and we are hand delivering the funds to Port au Prince now. We have been told supplies are available in Haiti, they are just expensive; the banks are closed, so the hospitals that are still functioning, like the children’s hospital we sponsor, St. Damien’s—the only free hospital serving the people of the slums of Port au Prince—have run out of medicine and fuel for their generators. The emergency cash is a quick fix; we are also partnering with Operation USA and are flying in containers of medicine and supplies within the next few days. Anyone interested in donating can go to our website.

APJ is holding a fundraising brunch this Sunday in Santa Monica, with a minimum donation of 5,000 a head. Amy Pascal, Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Jason Weinberg and other great friends are co-hosting; Moby and friends are playing. Anyone interested in attending can call my office, 310-319-1394.

Stars Support Artists for Peace and Justice, Making Long-Term Commitment to the Future of Haiti

In addition to the $5000 minimum donation, guests contributed not only dollars towards the current relief effort, but also pledged to support Haiti in the long-term. Penelope Cruz gave $50,000 per year for five years toward building schools. Javier Bardem pledged $10,000 per year over 10 years and AnnaLynne McCord matched the donation. As host Haggis shared his accounts of his past week in the disaster zone and talked about APJ's commitment to building a sustainable future for Haiti, many were moved to support Haiti well beyond the current crisis. Gerard Butler, Simon Barker and his wife, Rebecca Rigg, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig were just a few of the attendees who each pledged to give $50,000 per year for five years toward building the future of Haiti.

The Artists for Peace and Justice Haiti Benefit
JANUARY 31, 2010

Guests like Gerard Butler and Nicole Kidman each pledged $50,000 a year for the next five years to help re-build schools in the poorest neighborhoods of the Hatian capital Port-au-Prince. "For once, I have some money in my pocket and I'm relatively well-known. I have a voice and I want to try and use it to get the word out," said Butler. "I'm also going to head over [to Haiti] with Artists for Peace and Justice to see what I can do, even if it's just hauling bricks."
