Gerard Butler looked more like Emmerdale's Zak Dingle than red carpet heartthrob when he was pictured filming scenes for new movie Keepers in the Mull of Galloway, Scotland.

The 47-year-old sported a shaggy beard and country casuals as he was pictured on a hillside on Wednesday, with wild untamed locks which fell in loose curls.

The new movie is inspired by the story of an Arbroath lighthouse keeper called James Ducat from the 1900s whose death is surrounded in mystery.

Is that really him? Hollywood heartthrob Gerard Butler (left) was a dead ringer for Emmerdale star Zak Dingle (right) when he filmed new movie Keepers in Scotland on Wednesday

Variety says: 'Keepers is set on an uninhabited island 20 miles from the Scottish coast as three lighthouse keepers arrive for their six-week shift.

'They stumble upon something that isn’t theirs to keep, triggering a tense battle for survival as personal greed replaces loyalty amid isolation and paranoia.'

Following their strange disappearance, the bodies of the men were never found and conspiracy theories remain about who or what could have taken them from their post.

'Producers are Andy Evans, Ade Shannon, and Sean Marley for Mad as Birds; Butler and Alan Siegel for G-Base; and Brian Oliver for Cross Creek Pictures.'

Hot stuff: Pictured on the red carpet in 2010, the star looked incredible well groomed

Last year, Gerard spoke to GQ about his gruelling workout regime, saying: 'Right now I’m training five times a week.'

He said: 'It’s always a little harder when you’re on the road, unless you’re there for a while.

'I do a lot of cardio but I’m starting to lift heavy because in my next movie I’m supposed to be beefy, a big undercover cop in LA covered in tattoos – so it’s not big and cut, it’s just big! That’s a pain, it hurts.'

The superstar is also filming another movie, Den Of Thieves, which is slated for release in 2018.

The movie is about a thief, who plans a bank heist, but gets trapped between two sets of criminals.

He will star alongside 50 Cent, Pablo Schreiber and O'Shea Jackson Jr.
