(AP)A judge has dropped a misdemeanor battery charge against Gerard Butler.
Superior Court spokeswoman Mary Hearn says the charge was dismissed at a hearing Tuesday after the actor completed community service.
Butler could have faced up to six months in jail if convicted. His attorney, Blair Berk, declined to comment.
City prosecutors say the Scottish-born star of "300" had a run-in with a photographer on Oct. 7 after leaving a premiere party for the film "RocknRolla."
His manager has said Butler was forced to have his driver stop the car after the photographer sped through red lights and almost struck two pedestrians.
City Attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan (Mah-tel-JAN') says prosecutors are "satisfied" with the outcome.

| I wonder if the Giant Steps of 9/11 Walk was part of the community service?
For those that are wondering, it appears that Butler entered either a "no contest" or "guilty" plea at his earlier hearing and was given community service and probable probation. Upon completing the requisite community service (and possible probation) the charges were dropped. (He could still be in his probation period and may have to keep his nose clean for a period of years as well.) All of that is standard for a deal between a D.A. and someone accused of a misdemeanor with no prior record. It is usually done as part of a plea bargain and to prevent a trial.
All of this is my legal guess based on the fact that community service was mentioned in the article.

Gerard Butler Gets Off for Pap Scuffle Posted Jan 5th 2010 3:25PM by TMZ Staff
Gerard Butler is in the clear over that whole dust-up he had with a photog back in 2008.
A judge dismissed a misdemeanor battery charge today. Butler got into it with a pap after a premiere party in October 2008. Butler had claimed the photog had followed him around all night.
He could have gotten six months in jail if convicted.

| Thanks, Dallas. I wanted your opinion on the article.
I have no complaint with this outcome but will be curious as to how far the ripples from this tiny article travel. A verbal slap and some community time seems appropriate but I hope the original issue is not forgotten and was behind some hard conversations in Butler camp.
In hindsight, the Giant Steps did seem out of the ordinary.

| Well according to MSNBC the dismissal is dependant on community service to come. If that is the case, then my above analysis is the same with but with pending community service. This is typical and what most expected.

| I hope the "Win a Date with Gerry" isn't the community service. | |

| A twist on the first post! 50 hours is only two days of hard labour ....
But the case was dismissed 'pursuant to a civil compromise' that included Butler completing 50 hours of community service, the LA City Attorney’s Office confirmed.
The charge was filed last May over the alleged confrontation in October 2008.

Huh? I am dense, but 50 hours equals 6 (8 hour) work days plus an additional 2 hours. Or a REALLY long date for charity.

| A spokesman for the L.A. City Attorney's Office gives different details in this article below:
http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b160560_Law_Abiding_Citizen_Gerard_Butler_Settles_Suit.html
Law-Abiding Citizen Gerard Butler Settles Suit Gerard Butler just RocknRollad his way right out of a lawsuit.
The sometimes-studly Scot settled a misdemeanor battery charge out of court, stemming from a 2008 dustup with a paparazzo after the premiere of the aptly-titled Guy Ritchie flick.
Butler's much-delayed case finally made it to a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday, but the actor and alleged victim had already reached an undisclosed agreement.
Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the L.A. City Attorney's Office tells E! News: "The matter was resolved today with a dismissal as a result of a civil compromise–the defendant settled with the victim, and also completed 50 hours of community service, which we required. Everything has concluded."
