Gerard Butler Drops Out of 'Point Break' Remake (Exclusive) Butler was to have played Bodhi, the Zen surfer and robber originally played by Patrick Swayze.
Gerard Butler has dropped out of Point Break, Alcon’s remake of the early 1990s classic action movie.
Butler was to have played the Zen-infused thief originally played by Patrick Swayze, opposite Luke Bracey, who is playing hotshot FBI agent Johnny Utah, originally played by Keanu Reeves.
Sources say that the parting of ways occurred because of a confluence of factors. There have been creative differences and a scheduling conflict: Point Break will start shooting in late June, lasting several months, and will take its actors to international locales. But Butler also has on his docket London Has Fallen, the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, which shoots in the fall in London.
Insiders say Alcon is intent on maintaining its start date and will recast the part in the coming weeks.
Ericson Core is directing the movie, which has a script by Kurt Wimmer.
Alcon’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are producing, along with John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Wimmer.

Gerard Butler Has Dropped Out Of The Point Break Remake A Month Before It Starts Shooting By Vince Mancini
As far as I’m concerned, they already remade Point Break six times and called it Fast & Furious, but despite this, Alcon is still planning an official remake. Only they’re going to have to find a new Bodhi, because word on the beach is that Gerard Butler is out. Somewhere, there’s a phone call Matthew McConaughey isn’t answering.

“London Has Fallen?” Please, just call it “London Bridge Is Falling Down,” we’re all going to be thinking it.

So the director of Invincible, the writer of Salt, and a little more than a month to recast a major character? My gosh, I can’t imagine how this could go wrong.
How long has it even been since the original? 22 years? Man, LA has changed a lot in that time. The air got dirty and the sex got clean.
On a serious note, they remake a lot of movies, to the point where we’re all but numb to the idea, but Point Break still stands out as one of the most unremakeable. I try to think of the inevitably PG-13, 2014 version of “Speak into the microphone, Squidbrain!” or “Listen you snot-nose little shit, I was takin’ shrapnel in Khe Sanh when you were crappin’ in your hands and rubbin’ it on your face!” and it all just makes me very sad. The only way I could stomach this is if it had Gary Busey in a mo-cap suit playing every part and it was shot in the Home Depot parking lot.

Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation causes Gerard Butler to exit the Point Break remake By Sean O'Neal May 6, 2014 4:13 PM
As a great (or perfectly enjoyable after three beers) man once said, everything moves in cycles. So twice a century, the ocean lets us know how small we really are. A winter storm comes out of Antarctica, tearing up the Pacific. It sends a huge swell north 2,000 miles. And suddenly, Gerard Butler is no longer starring in the Point Break remake. Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter confirm that Butler is no longer attached to take over for Patrick Swayze as Bodhi—the zen guru whose philosophy is as extreme as the sports he practices—in the update of the 1991 actioner, despite the role offering all of the athletic equipment, opportunities for shirtlessness, and lowered expectations that are the hallmarks of any Gerard Butler movie.
The reasons for Butler’s departure are currently unknown, but speculatively attributed to a “confluence of factors,” ranging from Butler’s timetable for filming the Olympus Has Fallen sequel to “creative differences,” which you can have on a Point Break remake starring Gerard Butler, apparently. Or perhaps someone told Butler that locals rule, and that yuppie insects like him shouldn’t be surfing the break. Perhaps he realized that if you want the ultimate, you gotta be willing to pay the ultimate price: resolving your scheduling conflicts. But whatever the real explanation, the movie plans to press forward to meet its start date anyway, and has already resolved to find a new Swayze stand-in to forge a semi-erotic, sports-based kinship with the film’s Keanu Reeves replacement, Luke Bracey.
That’s because, for producers, this was never about money. It was about “us against the system”—that system that kills the human spirit by saying, “A 21st-century extreme sports remake of Point Break sounds dumb.” These producers, they stand for something. To those dead souls, inching along the freeway in their metal coffins thinking about how dumb it is, they’ll show them that the human spirit is still alive, by finding a less in-demand star than Gerard Butler to jump off things.

Gerard Butler bails on 'Point Break' remake
Wipeout! Action star Gerard Butler won't be starring in Alcon Entertainment's remake of the 1991 surf-crime thriller "Point Break" after all, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Butler was to follow in Patrick Swayze's footsteps as the nirvana-seeking bank robber Bodhi, acting opposite Luke Bracey ("G.I. Joe: Retaliation"), who is to play the intrepid FBI agent Johnny Utah (originally played by Keanu Reeves).
Due to a combination of creative differences and a scheduling conflict, however, Butler has dropped out of the film, THR says.
"Point Break" is to begin production in June and will span several months and international locales. Butler is also committed to a fall start for "London Has Fallen," the sequel to "Olympus Has Fallen," which is one of the few hits the actor has anchored in recent years.
Alcon reportedly intends to keep to its schedule and recast the role in the coming weeks.
Though Butler isn't a proven box-office draw, the departure nonetheless means the new "Point Break" doesn't have a big name to anchor it, either in front of the camera or behind it. Bracey is a relative unknown who played his biggest screen role, Cobra Commander, from behind a mask, while helmer Ericson Core hails from the world of cinematography and has yet to make his mark as a director.
The original "Point Break," directed by Kathryn Bigelow, has developed a cult following with its oh-so-'90s surf slang, copious action, and central bromance between Reeves and Swayze, but that's no guarantee that the reboot will get by surfing a wave of nostalgia.

Gerard Butler Dropping Out of 'Point Break' Remake Should be a Sign to Just Stop
Alcon still plans on moving forward

Anyone looking at Gerard Butler's recent track record would see it as good reason to skip whatever he decided to star in next. Even more to the point, people should certainly run from anything even he deems unworthy of his time, which is the case with the upcoming Point Break remake, of which Butler was set to star in opposite Luke Bracy (don't look at me like that, I hardly know who that guy is either).
Butler was to play Bodhi, the role made famous by Patrick Swayze in Kathryn Bigelow's original film, while Bracy was to play the Johnny Utah role previously portrayed by Keanu Reeves. Now, one month before shooting was to begin, Butler has bailed citing what THR refers to as "creative differences and a scheduling conflict:".
Wait a second, so there were some creative differences, but it was the conflation of creative differences and a scheduling conflict that caused him to leave? Is this to say if there wasn't a scheduling conflict he would have stayed despite the creative differences? Would he have stayed if there were no creative differences, but there was a scheduling conflict? What I'm getting at is this excuse is bullshit, but it doesn't really matter.
The film is being directed by the director of Invincible and the writer of the Total Recall remake and Ultraviolet. Can we really expect anything better than terrible? If you still have faith, does the fact Alcon Entertainment still plans on beginning filming in a month and recasting the role beforehand give you any pause? No? Well, enjoy the movie.

| Does GB need more money?
Still think the remake is stupid. Happy to not associate GB with it. A little over a month til Stoick the Vast, in full Scottish brogue.

He’s not coming back
The last time we talked about the (totally unnecessary) Point Break remake, Gerard Butler was signing on to play Bodhi. This movie is an abomination—the remake, not Point Break, which is holy relic of Bad Action Cinema— and I’m halfway convinced that “Point Break remake” is some kind of Hydra code phrase, but there is some news worth mentioning. With production set to begin in June, Butler has dropped out of the movie. Because of CREATIVE DIFFERENCES.
To be fair, the report also cites a (tenuous) scheduling conflict as The Remake won’t wrap until the fall, which will push it up against Spittle’s other project, the non-awaited sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen (no, I am not making this sh*t up). Apparently it’s asking a lot of Spittle to shoot two movies back-to-back, especially when he’s having a “creative difference”, so he bailed on The Remake.
What does a Gerard Butler creative difference look like? How awful does the decision making have to be before Gerard Butler objects to it? We all thought The Remake sounded terrible, but if even GERARD BUTLER thinks it’s a bad idea, it must be so awful it’s radioactive. I can’t fathom the thing that follows “we’re remaking Point Break” and manages to be even worse still than those foul words. “We’re remaking Point Break…and you’re going to have to attend your own fan convention to promote it.” That’d probably do it.
Producers Alcon Entertainment are determined to stick to their schedule and will be re-casting Bodhi immediately, and the movie is still being directed by Ericson Core, who may or may not be a stair master.
Attached – Butler in Australia with what’s probably a new girlfriend on the weekend.

Edgar Ramirez to Replace Gerard Butler in ‘Point Break’ Reboot (EXCLUSIVE)
Edgar Ramirez is in negotiations to replace Gerard Butler in Alcon’s “Point Break” reboot.
Alcon has been looking for someone to take over the role of Bodhi — played by Patrick Swayze in the ’1991 original — after Butler exited the project over a scheduling conflict, and looks to have found his successor in the “Carlos” star.
Pic also stars Luke Bracey and Ray Winstone with Ericson Core directing. The pic has been dated for Aug. 7, 2015.
The film will retain the original story of an FBI agent infiltrating a ring of criminals but will be set in the world of extreme sports.
Alcon’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce along with John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Kurt Wimmer.
The CAA and Impression Entertainment-repped Ramirez was last seen in Fox’s “The Counselor.”
