Gerard Butler: 'Argo' will take the Oscar

The actor is still deciding on his Oscar day plans, Adrien Brody party-hops with girlfriend Lara Lieto and Paul Haggis dishes on his new movie.

HOLLYWOOD -- Gerard Butler's officially in Argo's corner.

"Ben Affleck is turning out to really be one of the forefront directors of our time," said a tux-clad Butler at the Sunset Tower Hotel Thursday night before he picked up hosting duties at the Hollywood Domino & Bovet 1822 Pre-Oscar Gala & Tournament. "His movies are so watchable and so sophisticated and classy. I loved Argo. I also really enjoyed Silver Linings Playbook." But, "I think Argo will take the Oscar," he predicted.

Butler joined Paul Haggis, Donna Karan and Madeleine Stowe in hosting the pre-Oscars charity event, which featured a live auction and Hollywood-infused dominos tournament. The evening raised over a half million dollars for Artists for Peace and Justice, a non-profit organization that addresses issues of poverty around the world, particularly in Haiti.

Butler's personal favorite film this season? The low-budget wonder Beasts of the Southern Wild. "The movie that I found the most charming and original was Beasts of the Southern Wild," said the upcoming Olympus Has Fallen star. "It's hard to say what movie deserves an Oscar. You watch a movie like that and you look at the imagination and the artistry that went into it, and the performances by people who had never acted before that wipe the floor with myself and many other actors in this town. How can you have a winner in those circumstances?"

Despite the chilly temperatures, the open-air party (aided by a bevy of heat lamps) featured a swirl of guests including included Adrien Brody, who hopped over from the Vanity Fair party with his model girlfriend Lara Lieto, Ali Larter, David Arquette, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Kristin Davis, Moby (who hung out with Heather Graham), Peter Facinelli, Topher Grace, Karolina Kurkova, Rose McGowan, Josh Hartnett and Jessica Szohr.

Against the Hollywood backdrop, there was even a mock Haitian hut assembled for guests to experience, with four spare walls and a "kitchen" featuring a lone iron pot. "There is no stove," read a nearby placard. "The daily meal is prepared outside in a single pot over an open fire."

Haggis, who co-founded Artists for Peace and Justice in 2009, spent the party mingling after raising money (which included a few auctioned kisses from the stage). He confessed he's no pro with dominos. "I do play regular dominoes but these are classy-style," he joked. The Crash director remained mum on his Oscar picks. "I have favorites but I'm not going to tell you who they are," he teased. "I voted!"

Haggis is just back from eight months in Rome, where he shot his upcoming film, TheThird Person, with Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, James Franco, Brody and Maria Bello. "I'm starting to cut it now," he said. His mood? "Suicidal," he joked, laughing."I always feel that way as soon as I finish shooting a movie."

Meanwhile, Butler's still deciding if his tux will travel to the Oscars on Sunday. "I was thinking of maybe going up and visiting a space station and missing all the mayhem and then come back down Monday," he joked.

Oscar Week: Gerard Butler Hosts Stars to Help Haiti

An Oscar is its own reward, but, in some cases, the hype surrounding the big show can benefit others.

Take Hollywood Domino, a now-institution of a pre-Academy Awards event that combines the classic game with a fundraising effort for Artists For Peace & Justice: Relief for Haiti. West Hollywood's Sunset Tower hotel housed the annual black tie affair, hosted by Gerard Butler and director Paul Haggis.
"Not only did they lend their names, they gave their money," Haggis said of Butler and an absentee Clint Eastwood. "And if you've ever asked for money from an actor you know what I'm talking about."

Butler was joined by big screen men like David Arquette, Adrien Brody, Peter Facinelli, Jesse Williams, and supportive singer Moby, all adhering to the black tie dress code.

Ladies like Ali Larter, Madeleine Stowe and Emmanuelle Chriqui equaled the formal style, especially Rose McGowan, who rocked a black dress and some Marilyn Monroe-esque blonde pin curls.

As for Eastwood, TMZ reports the actor/director as the latest victim in the swatting trend, which may have been the cause of his absence. Multiple law enforcement units were dispatched to his home after reports of armed men inside and found nothing.

A live auction served as the centerpiece for the festivities he missed, where power brokers like designer Donna Karan encouraged the showbiz elite to fork over cash in the name of relief effort.

Following the auction, a live band kept the momentum going for late arrivals like Josh Hartnett. The former teen idol arrived alone and mingled with folks like Larter's husband, funnyman Hayes MacArthur.

An unusual chill forced guests like Kristin Davis away from the hotel's patio -- where Sunday night's legendary Vanity Fair after-party will take place -- and inside to huddle near a late-night buffet of skirt steak and mac 'n' cheese while champagne and Red Bull flowed.

News/2013 Oscar Week Parties: Gerard Butler Hosts Event for Haiti, Gets Big Kiss for Really Big Donation

Last night, the Hollywood Domino & Bovet 1822 Pre-Oscar Gala & Tournament was held at the historic Sunset Tower Hotel in Hollywood, which was made over in a mysterious film noir theme for the night. Gerard Butler took on hosting duties for the event.

Host With the Most:
"Relax, have fun and don't take it so seriously," Gerard told us about the best advice he's gotten for hosting a party. "The fact is, you're there for the right reasons. You're there because you care. So it can't really come out the wrong way."

But that doesn't mean his competitive side doesn't come out just a little when we discussed the night's dominoes tournament: "Listen, if a few faces have to get punched in order for me to win this tournament, then they shall be punched," he joked. "I'll do whatever it takes. And that includes killing somebody."

High Roller:
The whole night was arranged to benefit Artists for Peace and Justice, an organization founded to aid Haiti. "It's been an amazing thing, I just feel really honored to be a part of it," Butler explained to us before the event. "That's why events like tonight, with me turning up and winning this tournament and becoming a worldwide star through my domino abilities hopefully in some ways will help the children of Haiti," he said with a huge laugh.

And he put his money where his mouth was...and then his mouth got some action too. Director Paul Haggis, who started Artists, held an auction of sorts early on in the night, with no prizes to win except "joy." He asked for a donation of $75,000 and Gerard was first to put the money up. "Come up here and let me give you a big kiss," Haggis said. And then did!

Wined and Dined:
You can't compete on an empty stomach, so multiple buffets were serving up chicken breasts, beef and potatoes, rice and mushrooms and some good ol'-fashioned mac 'n' cheese.
As far as beverages go, the party was sponsored by Cîroc Vodka and had plenty of specialty cocktails to pick from (our favorite being the "Peach Perfection": Cîroc Peach, peach purée, muddled raspberries, lime juice and champagne).

Odd Couples: Adrien Brody and his sexy date were glued to each other's sides all night, arms constantly around each other, except when Adrien was chatting with...Josh Hartnett! Yes, the star of all your favorite late '90s/early 2000s films stepped out and was looking better than ever.

Later, Josh hit up the patio and was spotted chatting with Heather Graham. Another sighting: Heather arrived with Moby (yes! That Moby!) but when asked whether they're dating, the duo said they are "just friends and neighbors."

Hollywood Domino Pre-Oscar Party Sponsored by Beck’s Sapphire

Hollywood - Last night, the Hollywood Domino Gala took place at Sunset Tower, sponsored by Beck’s Sapphire. The event was attended by celebs and socialites and more than $200,000 was donated to Artists for Peace and Justice (with Gerard Butler giving the first major donation!). Jackson Brown performed live for the crowd and guests enjoyed Beck’s Sapphire, a brand new premium beer offering.

Guests included Gerard Butler, Adrien Brody, Josh Hartnett, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Karolina Kurkova, Peter Facinelli, Ali Larter, David Arquette, Jesse Williams, Russell Simmons, Kristen Davis, Madeleine Stowe, Heather Graham, Moby, and Rose McGowan.

Inside Scoop:

Director Paul Haggis welcomed the crowd and kicked off the call for donations for Artists For Peace And Justice in support of the organizations efforts in Haiti.

Gerard Butler gave the first donation of $75,000 and was greeted by a big kiss from Paul Haggis. He then acted as cheerleader for the cause, wandering through the crowd and encouraging others to donate as well.

Josh Hartnett, sipping on Beck’s Sapphire, was a true gentleman, posing for photos with attending fans.

A solo Peter Facinelli kept the night a boy’s night, floating through the party with a group of guys, creating friends along the way.

Gerard Butler and David Arquette’s Stay-Sober Secret!

Laying off the booze when you’re in Hollywood is no easy task — especially during awards season when there’s a different party almost every night. But Wetpaint Entertainment has learned both Gerard Butler and David Arquette — two of our favorite sober leading men — both relied on the same beverage to help them get by: Tea of a Kind flavored iced teas!

We’re told David sipped the trendy new drink while cuddling up to girlfriend Christina McLarty at the pre-Oscars Hollywood Dominos bash. At the same party, Gerard Butler also threw back a few bottles.

“He really liked it,” an onlooker tells Wetpaint Entertainment. “He kept asking for more.” We’re told the company plans on sending him a steady supply.

Other fans of Tea of a Kind: Moby, Heather Graham, Josh Hartnett, and Adrien Brody.

Sounds like the perfect way to cool off in the upcoming months of spring!
