I realise the news has been saturated with this undeniably tragic event and that much soul-searching and reasoning will still come to play in the coming months. At times like this, the loss of innocence spirits can never be fully explained nor understood. As your President has so poignantly stated: no more graduations, birthdays, Christmases ...

But, as a teacher myself, I wanted to acknowledge and name the passionate, committed and outstandingly courageous teachers at this little community school. On this terrible day, all they did, they did for their students.

Principal Dawn Hochsprung ran out of her office full-tilt to confront (and hopefully overpower) a deeply disturbed gunman.

Mary Sherlach, alongside Mrs Hochsprung, ran towards the horror.

Victoria Soto shielded her students with her own body and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Anne Marie Murphy also placed her students safety above her own.

Lauren Gabrielle Rousseau, thrilled to be made a permanent member of staff, lost her life that day.

Rachel D'Avino, a recent addition to the school, also shielded an innocent student and died in the process.

May Eternal Rest Be Granted To Them, O Lord.
