I'm speculating, but the string around his wrist could be something the club he was in gives people to wear once they've paid the cover charge or something....I don't know. Or he could be doing what I do when I have some goal for myself or just something simple I need to remember. I wear a ponytail holder or ribbon around my wrist to remind me. Or it could just be a fashion statement he picked up from somewhere.
