Gerard Butler takes his bicycle out for a spin around the Soho neighborhood of New York City on Friday (October 5).

The 42-year-old actor, who was joined by a pal, rode around town until he decided to stop at a cafe for a pick-me-up.

Taking in the crisp fall air, Gerard Butler was spotted out in New York City with a friend on Friday (October 5).

The hunky 42-year-old actor hopped on his bike and rode around the Big Apple streets before taking a quick lunch break.

In career news, a new red band trailer for Butler’s film “Movie 43” recently hit the web.

Gerard stars alongside actors including Emma Stone, Halle Berry Anna Faris and Kate Winslet in the film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on January 25.

Bicycle buddies: Gerard Butler enjoys a leisurely lunch and a spin around town with a male friend

..He has a slew of movies set for release this year and 2013, so it was unsurprising that Gerard Butler was taking a bit of a break today before beginning his gruelling round of promotional duties.

The Scottish actor joined a male friend for a bicycle ride through New York City before the men took lunch together al fresco.

Gerard, 42, and his companion were dressed remarkably similarly in blue jeans, pale shirt, trainers and sunglasses as they took off for a spin around the city.

Later over lunch, Gerard was spotted clutching a city map while enjoying a coffee.

His next film Chasing Mavericks, where he plays legendary Northern California big wave surfer Frosty Hesson is slated for release at the end of this month.

Gerard told surf.transworld.net that he had to train hard to get his stamina up for the movie.

'I did long-distances paddleboarding and then basically just surfing - learning how to be on a board, do turns, get up on a wave. Really just learning how to look like I knew what I was doing,' he said.

'It was a lot in a short time, and I did say to myself, “What the f*** have I got myself into?” he added. 'But I operate best like that. If I know my back is up against the wall, then that’s what kicks me into action.

'Fear is a huge motivator for me. I went up to Santa Cruz and surfed with Frosty, the character I’m playing. I was just getting in the water and learning to deal with different types of conditions and different types of waves.

The star will also appear in forthcoming sports comedy film Playing For Keeps alongside Jessica Biel, Catherine Zeta Jones and Uma Thurman.
He plays a retired soccer professional with a roving eye in the film which is set to be released in December.
Then there's Movie 43 - an ensemble comedy starring Halle Berry, Kristen Bell and Kate Bosworth, which is released next year.
