Gerard, Demi and Kirsten Get Charitable in Beverly Hills

Turning up in the droves for a charitable fundraiser, the stars gathered together at the estate of Ron Burkle for an event honoring Simon Fuller and Paul Haggis in Beverly Hills, California on Thursday night (January 13).

Sponsored by Bvlgari, the invite-only function was thrown for quite the worthy cause - as money was gathered to go directly to the benefit of both Save The Children and Artists For Peace and Justice.

As for the guest list, stars such as Demi Moore, Gerard Butler and Kirsten Dunst all tossed on their finest ensembles as they worked the press area before heading inside for the festive soiree.

Also partaking in the charitable fete were Oscar winner Adrien Brody, Malin Akerman, Paz Vega, Lisa Edelstein and brother/sister stars Julianne and Derek Hough.

As for the beneficiaries, Save the Children is the world’s leading independent organization for children while Artists for Peace and Justice is a fundraising effort founded by Paul Haggis and friends that encourages peace and social justice and addresses issues of poverty and enfranchisement in communities around the world.

The many faces of Gerard Butler

Not only is Gerard Butler one of the hottest men in the world but he looks like he’d be one of the funniest! Gerry was photographed on the red carpet at the “Save The Children’s U.S. Programs And Artists For Peace And Justice Hosted By Bulgari on Thursday, January 13th, 2011 in Beverly Hills, California.

As he posed you can only imagine what the banter between the photographers and the hottie Scottie was due to all the funny facial expressions he was making.

With the one year anniversary of the Haitian earthquake just behind us, the folks at Artists for Peace are making sure money and aid continue to flow to the country. The organization’s immediate goal is to build schools to serve the poorest areas of Haiti, providing an education, hot meals, clean drinking water and regular medical treatments to the children living in the slums.

Gerard Butler, Olivia Wilde celebrate good deeds and diamonds at Bulgari bash

January 14, 2011 | 1:46 pm

The Ministry is always a fan of philanthropy and jewelry -- and so are stars such as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Malin Akerman, Kirsten Dunst, Gerard Butler, Adrien Brody and Gina Gershon.

Those names and more turned up at the Beverly Hills home of billionaire Ron Burkle, as bauble house Bulgari hosted a fundraiser for Save the Children U.S. and Artists for Peace and Justice -- with those charities honoring "American Idol" honcho Simon Fuller and director Paul Haggis, respectively.

Save the Children VP Mark Shriver addressed the celeb crowd at dinner, served on Burkle's tented and dressed-up tennis court, remarking, "My sister Maria and brother-in-law Arnold have a nice place, but this is amazing," referring to California's former first couple, Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Fashion darlings including Akerman, Milla Jovovich, Maria Bello, Julia Ormond and Ryan Seacrest's main squeeze Julianne Hough mingled before a live auction -- one that emptied a few deep pockets.

After accepting his award, Haggis remained on stage with a rep from auction house Christie's L.A. to heckle his famous friends. Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh nabbed a few items and even offered the use of his private plane for a volunteer vacation to Haiti -- which Sharon Osbourne scooped up for $25,000.

Olivia Wilde jumped on stage to implore folks to purchase a package benefiting the reading programs of Save the Children, reminding everyone that education is a lifelong process.

"Gerry Butler probably never finished seventh grade," the "TRON: Legacy" star joked.

Following the auction, Ricky Martin performed a six-song set. The Ministry wasn't really alive until we saw Butler fist pumping to "Livin' La Vida Loca," beside Jared Leto and Chace Crawford.

Saving the Children at a Modern-Day Xanadu
By MELENA RYZIK

Ricky Martin performing at a benefit for Save the Children at the home of Ron Burkle.LOS ANGELES— Whoever thought politics made for strange bedfellows has never visited the intersection of charity and celebrity.

On Thursday night the Bagger and our posse attended a benefit for Save the Children and Artists United for Peace and Justice, thrown by the luxury goods company Bulgari at the home of Ron Burkle, the supermarket magnate and Friend of Bill.

Well, ‘home’ is kind of an understatement. Mr. Burkle’s residence is a Beverly Hills estate called Green Acres; it was built in 1927 by Harold Lloyd, an early Hollywood star, who did “a really cool thing,” Mr. Burkle told us. “There’s this great children’s yard out in the back yard. He built the children’s yard before he built the house, so his kids would have fun coming here. It has a carousel and it has a slide and all this fun stuff.” (Imagine: the Bagger didn’t even know there was such a thing as a children’s yard.)

Lloyd lived there until his death in 1972, and Mr. Burkle has owned the estate for 18 years. He entertains often. Among the guests enjoying bacon-wrapped dates and pulled pork with radishes in his courtyard: the writer and director Paul Haggis (“Crash”), who was honored for his charitable work in Haiti; Simon Fuller, a producer of “American Idol,” also an honoree; Sharon Osbourne; Malin Ackerman; Demi Moore, svelte beyond compare; Paz Vega (ditto); Adrien Brody, in a tux and slightly askew black tie (though it was not a formal affair); Kirsten Dunst; Josh Brolin; and Niecy Nash, an actress from “Reno 911.” By the bar, Ashton Kutcher, in baggy jeans, chewed gum and spent a long time talking to Tom Hooper, the director of “The King’s Speech.” Gerard Butler made his usual rounds. “He’ll be hitting on you right now,” Mr. Haggis said, introducing him to his friend Frederique, a comely woman in a strapless dress.

Despite the actor-heavy guest list, and despite the fact that he is hosting a party at his home for “Black Swan” tonight, Mr. Burkle is not a member of the Academy nor is he in “the business” in this company town, he said.

“I swore when I moved to L.A. 18 years ago, that if I ever did anything in the movie industry, I would deny it, and if I ever backed a film, I would never put my name on it,” he said. “So I would not qualify for anything. The only time I wish I had a different policy is, I’d like easier access to screeners. That’s all I would do for it.”

Seriously? Even he craves getting those freebies?

“Easier,” he underscored. “I can get them. I just said easier.”

After the cocktail hour – when guests like Jared Leto, Cheryl Tiegs, Julia Ormond and Gina Gershon crept in – the dinner was held in an adjacent tent. Well, ‘tent’ is kind of an understatement. It was a black-carpeted structure, with a ceiling lined in fabric and walls made to look like a trompe l’oeil children’s library. The tables were black glass with quilted, leather-like legs. (Bulgari is known for its accessories.) The menu was created by the celebrity chef Suzanne Goin, of Lucques fame, and thoroughly enjoyed by the Bagger’s tablemate, Bleona Qereti, an Albanian pop star — “the Madonna of Albania,” according to her Web site — who said she was working on her first English-language album with the producer Timbaland. “It took me a year to get him to talk to me,” she confided, pressing a card in our hand.

Anyway, where were we?

Oh yes: the charity. Mark Shriver – brother of Maria and vice president of Save the Children – spoke, as did Mr. Haggis and Mr. Fuller. Mr. Haggis helped conduct a slightly foul-mouthed auction which raised hundreds of thousands for the organizations. Then Ricky Martin performed.

“Um, there are dancers and a fog machine,” the Bagger’s pal and illustrious producer Jeremy Beiler whispered to us, as the stage was set up. There sure were. Backed by a full band, Mr. Martin played a handful of songs, to a mostly enthusiastic crowd, led by Maria Bello, dancing in a sparkly mini-dress, and Milla Jovovich, swaying in a long gown. Mr. Leto, a musician himself (30 Seconds to Mars), just watched. At one point Mr. Martin jumped off the stage to plant a big kiss on Ms. Osbourne.

Afterward, the Bagger caught up with Mr. Butler, who had been cutting a swath of preemptive jealousy all night. (“You’re sitting close to my wife,” a Frenchman at his table told him, “so behave.”)

Does he always inspire that kind of fear in men?

“I think that’s something you’re just making up because it’s good journalism,” he said.

Actually, that would be the opposite of good journalism.

“Tell me, from the bottom of your heart, did you really notice that?” he asked the Bagger, and we said, resoundingly, yes.

O.K., he copped to it.

“I do think it’s sometimes something that I have to be sensitive of.” he said, “If a guy’s girlfriend or wife comes up and they both come up together, I always try to make the guy feel completely comfortable and not threatened. You know, if the wife’s a bit of a fan. Because I’ve had similar situations, and I feel like a total dork. So I try and be conscious of that.”

Then everybody went down the steep hill of the driveway to wait for the valets to return their cars, Ms. Bello with her shoes off.

A Night at a Hollywood 'Museum'
By MARSHALL HEYMAN

Here's one way to get people excited about a party: have it at a rich guy's house. The rich guy doesn't have to be there. Heck, he doesn't even have to live in the house at all. But open the doors of a (preferably well-known) billionaire's private home, let the guests snoop around a little and you have at least the beginnings of an evening worth buzzing about.

Thursday night, to kick off Golden Globes weekend, the businessman Ron Burkle opened his manse in Benedict Canyon for a benefit, sponsored by Bulgari, to raise money for Save the Children and Artists for Peace and Justice. The party honored Simon Fuller, the creator of "American Idol," who has done quite a lot of work for Save the Children on that television show, and the filmmaker Paul Haggis, who founded APJ in 2008.

On the way in, many of the invited celebrities, a crew that included Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Malin Ackerman, Gerard Butler (looking particularly svelte), Adrien Brody (dressed up, in black tie), Relativity Media's CEO Ryan Kavanaugh (dressed down, in jeans and Converse sneakers), Olivia Wilde and Maria Bello, were given Bulgari Save the Children rings to wear for the evening. (They retail for $370.) And then they made the steep, uphill climb into Mr. Burkle's massive, 44-room house, which, on the inside, looked something like the Frick.

"It kind of reminds me of my apartment back in New York," joked the actor Chace Crawford, who appears on "Gossip Girl."

In Mr. Burkle's courtyard, many guests happily engaged in the kind of one-upmanship that comprises much of award season weekends. "You're not invited to the CAA party at Soho House on Friday night?" "On Saturday? I'm going to Amy Pascal's house." (Ms. Pascal is a bigwig at Sony Pictures.) "I've been to the Globes so many times that I'm kind of over it."

Some others, like Kirsten Dunst and her manager, Eric Kranzler, ventured to look at Mr. Burkle's art. They took a close gander at a Renoir on the way into a larger sitting room. "Is that the Hockney that everyone has been talking about?" Ms. Dunst asked a security guard about a large, colorful painting on the wall.

The security guard shrugged. "Don't they have a Google App to figure that out?" he said.

On the way into dinner, Mr. Burkle explained that he doesn't spend that much time in Los Angeles or at this estate, which he purchased in 1993. He spoke a little bit about the history of the house, known as Greenacres and perhaps the nicest in town. "The silent film star Harold Lloyd started building it in 1927, and he never finished the gate," he said. "But he lived here for years on his profits from nickel movies."

Is this another room of the house?" one guest asked of the party tent, which was decorated like a black and white library, with each table covered with stacks of children's books. (Apparently Mr. Burkle was hosting another party at his house for the producers of "Black Swan" on Friday.)

"My sister, Maria, and my brother-in-law, Arnold, have a great pad, but this is really fabulous," Mark Shriver, the head of Save the Children's U.S. programs, told the crowd, referring, of course, to Maria Shriver and her husband, the movie star and former governor of California, neither of whom were in attendance.

As guests nibbled on their slightly fussy meals, Mr. Fuller and Mr. Haggis graciously accepted their honors. The latter thanked many of his actor friends—Milla Jovovich, Ms. Wilde, Ms. Bello and Josh Brolin among them—for their generosity, especially considering, "you know how hard it is to get an actor in this town to reach into their wallet and pay for lunch," he said.

Soon thereafter, Mr. Kavanaugh opened his own wallet to shell out $20,000 for a few nights at the Soho Grand and breakfast with Mr. Haggis and Ms. Jovovich in New York and offered up the use of his private plane for an auctioned trip to Haiti.

Then, Mr. Shriver took to the stage again to auction a short trip for four, guided by himself, to watch Save the Children in action.

Mr. Butler and Mr. Kavanaugh interrupted his noble action.

"You want to donate 15 grand to hear me drop an F-bomb?" the very clean cut Mr. Shriver asked, astounded. "You've got to be kidding me. Is this on video? I might need a beer for this. Could somebody bring me one?"

Of course, Mr. Shriver complied, and Mr. Butler and Mr. Kavanaugh came through on their offer.

Then, the singer Ricky Martin showed up to do a private performance. When he got to "Livin' La Vida Loca," it seemed like a perfectly appropriate choice.

Bulgari Event Brings Out The Best in Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler, you’ve never looked better! We barely even recognized you! The actor attended a Bulgari private event honoring Simon Fuller and Paul Haggis to benefit Save The Children and Artists For Peace and Justice at the home of Ron Burkle on Thursday in Beverly Hills. But he wasn’t the only good-looking Bulgari boy!

A little tan and a slightly slimmer frame has sure done Gerard well. But Chace Crawford and Josh Brolin were looking equally hot Thursday night!

But the ladies held their own with star power including Demi Moore, Kirsten Dunst and Malin Akerman!

Bulgari Gala goes to great lengths
Benefit brings out celebs for good cause
By Jenny Peters

It took $15,000 to get Save the Children managing director Mark Shriver (yes, he's one of those Shrivers) to "drop the F-bomb" at the Bulgari Gala on Thursday. It was just too much money for the kids, so he overcame his "Catholic guilt" and the cries from brother Tim Shriver (who yelled "we'll pay you not to do it") and threw one out at the elite gang assembled at Ron Burkle's palatial Beverly Hills estate.
Shriver followed honoree Paul Haggis, he of the Artists for Peace and Justice, to the stage, in the fantastical tented "library" set up for the A-list bash, which explained why the F-bomb was in play. Haggis was throwing them out like water as he urged the glittery crowd to contribute to that group's Haitian relief efforts, and it worked, as $100K was raised for four trips to that earthquake-torn country (the winners will go via Ryan Kavanaugh's private G4). That despite Maria Bello's roast of the Oscar-winning writer-director: "Paul Haggis is my hero, but I don't like to admit that because he is an ....!," she joked, letting go with an A-bomb.

Plenty of non-butthead philanthropy was evident at the $1,000-per-plate bash, as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher vied with Adrien Brody, Milla Jovovich, Olivia Wilde and Gerard Butler during the live auction. "American Idol" head honcho Simon Fuller also took home a Bulgari-created award for his Idol Gives Back charity initiative, while his producing partner Nigel Lythgoe cheered him on.

And once the altruistic part of the night was done, Hollywood's hottest kicked up their heels to an extended set of Ricky Martin tunes, with Sharon Osbourne and Joely Fisher leading the way. Chace Crawford, Jared Leto, Paz Vega, Jon Tenney, Cheryl Tiegs, Julia Ormond and Josh Brolin also felt the Latin fire as Martin shook the house that Ralph's built and sent everyone home with "La Vida Loca" spinning in their brains.
