Should I assume, based on the caption, that this is part of the commercial?

Caption: We are good to you here at GLAMOUR.COM. Here's a picture of Scottish hottie Gerard Butler getting all sweaty and dirty playing rugby in New York. The Hollywood actor was filming a new commercial for a cosmetics company - that'll be one advert we'll have on repeat, then…

Rugby and Football are different games with different rules.

But both run with the ball towards the goal, unlike soccer where you kick the ball toward the goal.

Dallas, you pretty much summed up what I know about rugby---a ball and a goal. As a sports fanatic, maybe I should catch a game. There is a college team nearby. But I have a very difficult time keeping up with baseball, football, and hockey (GO PREDATORS).

Thanks to the satellite I started watching soccer from the UK at times when no other sports or great movies were on. Now I am hooked! And of course I watched as much of the World Cup as I could.

Mix in the occasional basketball game and I haven't thought about rugby!

Tongue bitten, Nay.

Shoot, the SF Giants are playing and (gasp) winning, and I have no interest. Happy they are winning, could care less though, because it all starts over again next year.

I find that tiresome.

I understand. Most women do. I like the strategy and planning that comes with sports. Should we try for it on 4 and inches or go for a field goal? Should we bunt or let the batter swing? And of course there's the competitiveness of it. And I just love being a fan of my "teams!"

And I don't know if any of you are hockey fans but the Predators beat the Blackhawks tonight and since they knocked us out of the playoffs last year it's kind of a big deal!

I can't stand the black socks with sneakers thing either. Especially with jeans. I never understood why Gerry wears sneakers with jeans with dark (black or navy) socks. Is that a European thing, because I have seen others who aren't American wearing them? It's like they try to match their socks and jeans instead of wearing white socks.
It looks odd to me wearing dress-type socks with sneakers...

I ran across an article comparing Gridiron to rugby and loved how it describes the game differences and the type of "collisions" involved. For those who aren't familiar with American football and think Rugby is a "tougher" sport because there is little (and different) padding/protective gear, it explains it well. *cough, Nay, cough*

I especially like how it compares the two:
"Rugby is largely about possession and gridiron is largely about territory" and
"Rugby is a contact sport. Gridiron is a collision sport".

The differences in the types of "collisions" and "tackling" is due to the rules of the game. It's an interesting read, if anyone is interested.

Dallas, I read every word! Thanks! I have to find a rugby game to watch now!

Sami--the Knights! There's a blast from the past! I never went to a game but I always wanted to go to one. Outside of football and baseball I don't get to go to many games in person because it is expensive. The last basketball game I saw was at the OMNI!

Yes. Hmmm. Read the article. Blah blah gridiron blah blah senseless violence blah blah collision blah blah helmet blah blah blah.

Here is where I'll agree:
I will go on record as stating that I prefer rugby; it's more fun to play and certainly more fun to watch!

Do you get a lot of American football on TV in Australia? Because I can tell you there's little to no rugby on TV here in the U.S.

I think it's safe to say Rugby is more of a Commonwealth country game, Donna. No, we only have your Gridiron on cable tv in Australia.

I thought the article was interesting in that it explained the differences in the game, and thus why the physicality of the game is somewhat different. While the physicality of American Football is a major part of the game, it also has a great deal of strategy. The really good players understand the game and rules and try to "outplay" and "outstrategize" their opponents. It's not all about violence and brute strength.

(But, of course, I love the violence and physical aspect about it!)

I'm assuming Rugby is very similar and there is a lot of strategy involved. I think I would enjoy watching it too. Although it would take me awhile to understand the rules. Don't you have to "pass" behind you (or laterally) in rugby? (In American Football the line of scrimmage determines the type of passing allowed.)
In order to be able to really enjoy the game, I would need to understand the rules (and differences). Which is why I found the article explaining the rules affecting tackling and "collisions" in the two games interesting. It helps me appreciate the different games as a whole.

I have to say, though, that I find soccer incredibly boring most of the time. Until they get close to the goal, I find it a snoozefest....

(Maybe I just don't know enough about the game. But I suspect it's because there isn't enough "physical" contact between the players. Very Happy Intertwining feet and legs just don't cut it for me and they players often don't seem to really fight it out until they get near the goal. )
